15 best upcoming Android games — action, racing, strategy, and more
Fortnite, Stardew Valley, and Alto’s Odyssey are just a few of the great Android titles released in the last year. We expect to see many more in the near future from well-known developers like Nintendo, Gamevil, and Niantic.
Here are the 15 best upcoming Android games we’re most excited about, in categories like adventure, action, racing, and more.
1. Mario Kart Tour

Mario Kart Tour is a mobile racing game based on Nintendo’s classic kart racing series. It features simple controls anyone can get used to and offers 30 characters, 20 karts, and 10 gliders to choose from. You can compete in 16 cups, with each of them including four races.
You earn Grand Stars when you complete a race, with a maximum of five available in each one. When you gather enough Grand Stars, you get free gifts like emerald gems that can be used to unlock new drivers, karts, and gliders.
Nintendo has already launched the closed beta of Mario Kart Tour, which is only available in the U.S. and Japan at the moment. The game will officially be released this summer, which means somewhere between the end of June and September. To learn more about the game including what we didn’t like in the beta test, click here.
2. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is an AR game created by Niantic, the same developer behind Pokémon Go. It’s an officially licensed property, so expect to see Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, Buckbeak, and a bunch of other characters from the Harry Potter universe.
Your job is to solve the mystery of The Calamity and return Foundables to their rightful place.
The story of the game goes something like this: A calamity has struck the wizarding world, causing Foundables that include various artifacts and creatures to mysteriously appear in the Muggle world. Your job is to team up with witches and wizards from across the world and solve the mystery of The Calamity, return Foundables to their rightful place, and more.
The beta version of the game is already available in New Zealand, but there’s no word on when it will be officially launched. But since you can already pre-register for it on the Play Store, it likely won’t be long before it’s released.
3. Gears Pop!
Next up on our list of the best upcoming Android games is Gears Pop!, which is published by Microsoft and based on the company’s Gears of War franchise for Xbox. The title combines Gears characters with the art style of the popular Funko Pop figures.
Gears Pop! revolves around explosive real-time multiplayer battles in the Gears universe. However, you can also take on AI opponents in order to test out new strategies and squads. You can build your squad by collecting and upgrading iconic Gears of War heroes and villains — more than 30 of them are available in the game.
The title has already soft launched in a few countries, but there’s no word on when it will officially be released globally. In addition to Android, it will also make its way to iOS.
4. Minecraft Earth
Microsoft is also working on Minecraft Earth, a new AR mobile game for Android as well as iOS devices. According to the game’s website, players can build structures with other players and place them in the real world at life-size. You can build them with your friends as well as team up with others for mini-adventures.
Minecraft Earth also features many familiar mobs Minecraft fans will know and love, as well as a bunch of new ones. Players have the option to breed unique mob variants and use them to populate their builds. Minecraft Earth is a free-to-play title, with in-game items available for purchase.
The closed beta of the game will be released this summer, but there’s no word on when the full version will officially launch. You can already sign up for the beta via the button below.
5. Shadowgun War Games
This upcoming title from Madfinger Games is a competitive multiplayer shooter set in the Shadowgun universe. In addition to Android, it’s also coming to the Nintendo Switch and iOS devices.
Shadowgun War Games features heroes from across the series that take part in 5v5 Capture the Flag battles. Each character has unique weapons and abilities, and your job is to coordinate strategies with your teammates to win. The game is s presented as a fictional sport/game show taking place in an arena packed with action-hungry spectators — as shown in the trailer above.
An exact release date for the game has not been announced yet, but you can sign up for the closed beta on the developer’s website to try it out once it’s released.
6. Human: Fall Flat
Human: Fall Flat is a physics-driven puzzle game with platformer elements. It was first released on PC back in 2016 before making its way to consoles. Thanks to an agreement between the title’s publisher Curve Digital and 505 Games — known for games like the ARMA series and Payday 2 — Human: Fall Flat is coming to Android.

In Human: Fall Flat, you step into the shoes of Bob, an average guy with no superpowers or other extraordinary skills. The goal is to take Bob through his dreams, which are full of puzzles, dangers, and surprises. You’ll have to use various object to solve the puzzles, some of which are quite tricky.
Unfortunately, there’s no word on when the game will hit Android devices. And although this hasn’t been confirmed yet, it looks like Human: Fall Flat will be a premium game, meaning you’ll have to pay a few bucks to play it.
7. Forza Street
Microsoft’s Turn 10 Studios is adding a new game to the popular Forza series. Called Forza Street, it’s a free-to-play racing game that’s already available for Windows 10 devices and is coming to Android sometime later this year.
As you can tell by its name, the new game is all about street racing. Your goal is to win events, after which you get points to upgrade your cars or buy new ones to add to your garage. Unlike the Forza Motorsport series, Forza Street is aimed at casual gamers who want a more arcade-like experience.
You still have to put in lots of effort to win races, though. The game is all about timing: pressing the gas, brake, and boost option at the right moment is the key to overtaking opponents and finishing the race first. To learn more about the game, check out the short trailer above.
8. Call of Duty: Mobile
Call of Duty: Mobile is a free-to-play multiplayer shooter. The game will include at least five multiplayer modes — Free-For-All, Frontline, Team Deathmatch, Hardpoint, and Domination — and seven maps, including Nuketown, Crash, and Hijacked.
The title will also feature a battle royale mode from day one, which will support up to 100 players per match. You’ll be able to play in first- or third-person and pick a class before each battle. There will be six of them available — Defender, Mechanic, Scout, Clown, Medic, and Ninja — each of which has its own ability and class skill.
The Call of Duty: Mobile closed beta is already live in a few countries, including India. Unfortunately, the developer has not yet announced when the game will be officially launched. It’s already listed on the Play Store, where you can sign up to get notified when it’s released.
9. Bad North
Bad North is a real-time strategy game with beautiful, minimalist graphics. You take on the role of a prince, whose island has been invaded by Vikings. Your mission is to fend them off with the help of an army that’s in your total control.
In Bad North, positioning is everything.
The game is all about positioning. You have to place your army at the right spots across the battlefield to come out on top. You also have to react quickly and know when to retreat to avoid defeat. Once you win a battle, you take on a new one on a different island, each of which has a unique layout.
Bad North is already available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. The developer says it will come to Android in 2019, but didn’t give a more specific timeframe.
10. H1Z1
H1Z1 is a battle royale game, similar to PUBG and Fortnite. You jump out of an airplane with up to 150 other players and start looking for guns, ammo, and other supplies once you land. Then it’s time to go on the hunt and take down as many opponents as possible. The last one standing wins.
The playzone gets smaller and smaller throughout the game, bringing players closer together and making sure you’re always on your toes. Just like in PUBG, there are vehicles available so you can get from place to place faster. You can play solo or team up with one or even four other players.
H1Z1 isn’t as popular as PUBG or Fortnite, but it still has millions of devoted fans. It’s free to play and available on PS4 and PC. The company has confirmed a mobile version is in the works, but there are no details on when it’s coming.
11. Project Cars GO

Project Cars, a popular racing game on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, is getting a mobile spin-off. Called Project Cars GO, it will come with loads of exotic cars and tons of customization options, just like the PC and console versions.
Project Cars is known for an authentic racing experience, and the mobile version promises just that. The game has sold over two million copies worldwide so far and is one of the best of its kind in my opinion.

Gamevil and Slightly Mad Studios are developing the game, but there’s no word on the release date. Slightly Mad Studios CEO Ian Bell said racing fans will be “stomping the gas pedal and burning rubber very soon,” which makes us think it won’t be long until Project Cars GO makes its debut. When it does, it will give all the other titles on our list of best upcoming Android games a run for their money.
12. Diablo Immortal
Back in November, developer Blizzard Entertainment announced it’s working on Diablo Immortal, its second mobile game. The title is being developed from the ground up, so it’s not a port of a previous Diablo PC or console game.

The storyline takes place between the events of Diablo II and III. The Archangel Tyrael is believed to be dead, while the Worldstone has been shattered into various fragments. Those Worldstone segments are the source of new and ancient evil creatures who want to use the stone’s power to take over the land.
The game lets you choose from six classes (Barbarian, Monk, Wizard, Crusader, Demon Hunter, and Necromancer), with each one having a set of at least 12 skills. You’ll be able to explore and fight in nine outdoors areas and will come across a lot of creatures never seen before in a Diablo title. The game is already listed on the Play Store, but an official release date has not been announced yet.
13. Levelhead
Butterscotch Shenanigans, the developer behind the popular Crashlands game, is developing a new title called Levelhead. This 2D platformer lets you build your own levels and publish them for everyone to play. You can use more than 60 elements to get the job done, including enemies, hazards, paths, switches, secrets, power-ups, and more.
It’s a cross-platform game, so levels created on Android will work on PC and iOS, and vice versa. Up to four people can play a level at once, or even create levels together. If you’re not into that, the single-player campaign lets you take control of GR-18 — a delivery robot in training.
Based on the short trailer (above), Levelhead looks like a lot of fun if you’re into platforming games. It’s coming to PC, iOS, and Nintendo Switch, in addition to Android.
14. Impossible Bottles

Impossible Bottles is described as a rhythm game. You take on the role of a genius inventor who wants to provide an endless source of energy to the world with the help of his machines — from tiny robots to enormous golems.
To get the job done, you have to power the robots by firing streams of electricity in sync with the music. You can check out what this looks like by clicking here. But be careful: even a small mistake regarding the musical rhythm could create a global blackout and destroy the robots. The game features 10 hand-drawn robots, easy single-tap gameplay, and original electronic tracks to go along with each machine.
According to the game’s website, Impossible Bottles will be released in the summer of 2019, which means somewhere between the end of June and September. There are no details whether it will be a free-to-play title or not.
15. Payday: Crime War
Already a popular first-person shooter on PC and consoles, Payday is coming to Android. Payday Crime War is a multiplayer, team-based PvP title. One team takes on the role of criminals trying to perform a robbery. The other team steps into the shoes of a SWAT team trying to prevent the crime.
Up to eight players can play in a match, which can happen in different locations. As you progress through the game, you can get new weapons and additional abilities to step up your game.
Overkill Software set up a website for the upcoming game, claiming it’s coming soon. An exact date has not been shared with the public yet. However, the developer is already testing out the game with a closed beta program, which hopefully means it won’t be long before it’s released.

These are the some of best upcoming Android games to keep an eye out for, though we’re sure plenty of other interesting titles will debut this year.

Justice Department eyeing antitrust case against Google

Google is said to be the target of a new Justice Department investigation, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post.
The antitrust division of the Justice Department has put together the basics needed to form an investigation, say sources familiar with the agency’s plans. The move would put the search giant’s business practices under the microscope and could spell trouble for its multitude of business units. In addition to its main search business, Google offers a wide range of products and services, including Gmail, Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Android.
Google no stranger to investigations
In 2013, the Federal Trade Commission concluded a similar probe into Google’s behavior. At the time, the FTC deemed it the company hadn’t broken any laws. Even so, Google voluntarily made some changes to the way it ran select business units to appease investigators. The Justice Department and FTC only recently agreed which of the two agencies, which share antitrust duties, would pursue the new investigation into Google.
Google is a frequent target of the European Commission. In March, the E.U. fined Google $1.7 billion over “abusive” online ad strategies. In July 2018, the E.U. socked Google with a $5.1 billion fine over Android antitrust concerns.
The timing of the new investigation comes after some in the U.S. government have called for large tech firms to be broken up.
In March, Sen. Elizabeth Warren suggested companies such as Google and Facebook be pulled apart. Specifically, she believes mergers and acquisitions have given these companies too much power.
“Current antitrust laws empower federal regulators to break up mergers that reduce competition,” she wrote in a post on Medium.
Neither the Justice Department nor Google immediately responded to requests for comment, and the exact nature of the probe is unknown. For example, it’s unclear if the Justice Department has yet contacted Google about the potential investigation.
Android Authority will provide more details about the investigation once they are made available to the public.

OnePlus 7 impressions: It’s ‘Flagship Killer’ all over again

What happens when you take a really good phone, improve the specifications and reduce the price? You get the OnePlus 7. The OnePlus 7 is, for better or worse, a faster OnePlus 6T. It’s a phone that sticks to the OnePlus ethos of providing top-notch hardware and software at a fair price point and it absolutely nails it.
While the OnePlus 7 Pro takes on the minimalist school of design with its uber-clean front and a hidden front camera, the OnePlus 7 is all about usability and reducing friction. The front of the phone is essentially the same as the OnePlus 6T, right down to the waterdrop notch. The phone makes no pretense of hiding away the front camera in fancy ways like a punch-hole display. It also doesn’t have the curved edges of the Pro, which means the OnePlus 7 is not just easier to grip but also has a higher chance of surviving a fall.

Some might say that the screen here isn’t quite as amazing as the 90Hz, Quad HD panel on the OnePlus 7 Pro, but the display is more than serviceable. This is the same “optic AMOLED” panel we saw on the OnePlus 6T, and unless placed next to the Pro, I doubt any user would find it to be anything less than great.
This is an excellent display with minimal color shift. Colors look vibrant, with just a small dose of over-saturation but it is easy to tone it down in the settings. If I had to nitpick, I wish it would go just a bit brighter. In my short time with the OnePlus 7, I’ve noticed it can be hard to read it outdoors in the blazing Indian summer sun.
The in-display fingerprint scanner works swiftly and reliably, every single time.
The OnePlus 7, like the OnePlus 7 Pro, gets an updated in-display fingerprint scanner and I truly believe the company has finally nailed the implementation. Almost all such fingerprint scanners, so far, have left me with a sense of frustration after repeated attempts at unlocking the phone. No such thing with the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro. It works swiftly and reliably, every single time. If you wish to use face unlock, well that’s available as well, and you wouldn’t have to wait for the camera to pop-up either.
This year round, the OnePlus series has gained dual stereo speakers. The speakers are Dolby Atmos-capable, but realistically, that is little more than a marketing gimmick. What you do get are speakers that are loud and mostly quite crisp to listen to. You won’t be starting your next house party with these, but they’ll do the trick while watching a YouTube video or two. There is little bass here, but the audio comes as clear all the way through and you can comfortably crank up the volume to the max.

Talking about ergonomics, I noticed the OnePlus 7 is a whole lot more comfortable to use compared to the OnePlus 7 Pro. For me, that’s largely because of the reduced weight of the phone. The OnePlus 7 weighs a whopping 24 grams less than the Pro’s 206 grams and that makes a world of a difference.
The camera bump on the OnePlus 7 stands out noticeably.
It’s not just the weight though, the OnePlus 7 is significantly shorter, not as wide and definitely slimmer than the OnePlus 7 Pro. All of this to say that the OnePlus 7 is incredibly comfortable to hold and slip into your pocket. Except for the camera bump. Inexplicably, the camera bump on the OnePlus 7 stands out noticeably, and will definitely catch on to pockets while you try to slide the phone in.

In most countries, the OnePlus 7 will be available in just a glossy midnight black color. Our OnePlus 7 review unit, however, is finished in a candy-apple red that looks downright stunning. This is one of those rare occasions where a color as outrageous as this bold red manages to look sophisticated. OnePlus has wisely opted not to go for a garish gradient design. The mirror-finish red has a certain depth to it that will turn heads, as it reflects light at various angles.
That said, I do miss the attractive, understated matte finish of previous OnePlus devices and can only hope that the company will bring it back in a future colorway. The red edition is exclusive to India and that too, only on the high-spec model with 8GB of RAM.
Let’s talk performance
So what do you miss out when you opt for the “basic” variant of the OnePlus 7 series? Turns out, not too much. The phone is still powered by a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 855 chipset and is paired with between 6 and 8GB of RAM. With the higher-end variant, you even get a whole 256GB of storage, which should be enough for most users.

The OnePlus 7 is as fast as Android phones get at the moment. Without the added burden of a 90Hz display and a higher resolution panel from the Pro, it is highly likely that you will get ever so slightly better performance in games. In my time with the phone, I observed blistering-fast performance all the way through. The phone can handle anything you throw at it and then some.
The OnePlus 7 is as fast as Android phones get at the moment.
Oxygen OS continues to be a shining example of a manufacturer skin done right. The company’s approach towards keeping everything as near stock as possible with a few choice additions has helped it become incredibly popular. It doesn’t hurt that it helps OnePlus push out Android updates that much quicker as well.
Like every year, OnePlus has made a few changes to the software, but there has been one addition that caught me by surprise. If you thought Digital Wellbeing shames you about your addiction to your phone, Zen Mode lets you take action on it. Zen Mode completely cuts off access to everything except the camera and emergency phone call access. You will not receive any notifications, nor you will be able to access any app. Arguably, the best aspect of the feature is that you cannot disable it once you’ve switched it on.
The OnePlus 7 ships with a 3,700mAh battery, which is the same as on the OnePlus 6T. While I’ll hold back my final impressions for the full review, battery life has so far been impressive. The phone manages to deliver between six to seven hours of screen on time, with a mixed-use workload including a lot of emails, social media use, and a bit of gaming.
It’s a bit unfortunate that OnePlus did not opt for the larger 4,000mAh battery pack from the OnePlus 7 Pro. The smaller and lower-resolution screen and the lack of a pop-up motor should help in balancing out longevity.
The OnePlus 7 does not support Warp Charge.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the regular OnePlus 7 does not ship with Warp Charge support. Now, the existing 20W Dash Charge solution is plenty fast for most, but if you want the fastest charging capabilities, you will have to upgrade to the higher-end model.
Is the OnePlus 7 camera any good?
The OnePlus 7 has a fairly pared-down camera experience that sticks to the basics. The primary camera is a 48MP sensor, a Sony IMX586 of course, paired with a 5MP depth-sensing unit. The primary sensor uses pixel-binning to combine adjoining pixels to produce a cleaner 12MP image. There is no wide-angle camera here, nor is there a telephoto sensor, so you are fairly limited in terms of creative photo angles.

What the camera lacks in versatility, it makes up for in image quality. Images generally look quite good, though not quite as good as those from a Google Pixel 3a. There is a slight difference in the aperture size between the OnePlus Pro, but I did not notice an appreciable difference in image quality.

OnePlus 7: What do we think?
The OnePlus 7 is priced at 559 euros / 499 pounds / 32,999 rupees (~$473) for the 6GB/128GB variant depending on the market you are in. Even at the higher end, 600 euros / 549 pounds / 37,999 rupees (~$545) is not a lot of money to pay for the 8GB/256GB version. This is a true return to form for OnePlus to its “flagship killer” origins.

Common sense says that I should like the highest-end, pro version of a smartphone. Yet I find myself drawn to the OnePlus 7. The OnePlus 7 takes the best of the OnePlus 7 Pro and distills it down to a form factor that, for lack of better words, works.
The OnePlus 7 distills the best of the OnePlus 7 Pro to a form factor that is a lot more comfortable.
It is not a perfect phone and it lacks some nice to have features like wireless charging and an IP rating, but it delivers on what it sets out to promise and that is performance. This is one of, if not the fastest Android phones around, period. And that’s not just for the price. The OnePlus 7 has the specs and the brilliant software. More importantly, hardware and software work in tandem to create a usage experience that is one of the best in the business.

Got Oreo?
Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll. Before we start
As with older versions, the update to Android 8.0 Oreo has been released by Google, but many factors influence its actual availability. First and foremost, your manufacturer and carrier (in case you own a carrier version) control when your phone will get Oreo. Other factors are your specific model, your location in the world, and whether you bought the device unlocked or through a carrier.
Just because your specific phone or tablet is not on the list, it doesn’t mean it won’t get the Oreo update. The opposite is also true. We make efforts to collect accurate information for all manufacturers, but mistakes happen – if you spot one, let us know.
