EU lawmakers vote in favor of common charger despite Apple’s plea

Update, January 31, 2020 (2:19 AM ET): Despite Apple’s attempts at convincing EU lawmakers to rethink their call for a common smartphone charger, the European Parliament has voted in favor of the proposal.
Reuters reports that the European Parliament voted by 582-40 in favor of a resolution for a single charging standard. It is now upon the European Commission to accept the resolution and lay down rules, which lawmakers say, should be adopted by July.
Interestingly, the parliamentary resolution also urged the Commission to adopt rules for wireless charging. It said that wireless chargers should be able to charge many different mobile devices.
Apple has not yet commented on the EU resolution, although it is poised to take a significant hit because most of its phones sport Lightning ports. You can read more about this in the original article below.
Original article, January 24, 2020 (5:19 AM ET): Last week, news broke about the European Union’s intentions to create a law that could force smartphone makers like Apple to adopt a common charging standard. The EU believes that consumers and the environment would benefit if all phones used the same type of charger.
Pushing back against the move, Apple has reportedly said that adopting a common charger would stifle innovation in the industry. It also believes that if this were to become mandatory, it would create a heap of e-waste and harm consumers.
Apple, which provides Lightning chargers with most of its iPhones, stands to lose the most if the EU makes universal chargers compulsory. A significant chunk of the company’s revenue comes from the sale of accessories like chargers, Lightning cables, and adapters.
Meanwhile, most Android phones already support USB-C charging and it shouldn’t be hard for Apple to get on board.
However, in a statement to Reuters, Apple said, “We believe regulation that forces conformity across the type of connector built into all smartphones stifles innovation.”
The Cupertino-based tech company also claims that the move could harm the European economy.
To prove its point, Apple commissioned a study by Copenhagen Economics outlining the potential consumer harm from a mandatory move towards a common charger.
The study apparently found that it would cost consumer €1.5 billion if the regulation comes in effect, outweighing the €13 million associated with environmental benefits.
The study also claims that 49% of EU households rely on different types of chargers, of which only 0.4% experience any significant issues.
Apple feels that the mandate is unnecessary as the industry is already moving to USB-C via a connector or cable assembly. The iPhone 11 Pro does have a USB-C charger, however users still need a USB-C to Lightning cable.
The tech giant hopes that the European Commission would “continue to seek a solution that does not restrict the industry’s ability to innovate.”
What are your thoughts on a universal charger for all smartphones? Do you think it is a good idea? Let us know in the comments section below.

Google issues coronavirus ‘SOS Alert’ in Search, here’s what that means

Google has launched an SOS Alert for the coronavirus in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO). What this means is that Google will now display important resources for coronavirus right in Search results.
Today we launched an SOS Alert w/ @WHO, to make resources about #coronavirus easily accessible. When people search for related info on @Google, they’ll find the alert atop results page w/ direct access to safety tips, info, resources & Twitter updates from WHO.
— Google Communications (@Google_Comms) January 30, 2020
When you search for coronavirus-related info on Google, you will find the alert atop the results page. You will also get quick access to safety tips, info, resources and Twitter updates from WHO.
Here’s what Google’s coronavirus SOS alert looks like in Search.
This is not the first time Google has issued an SOS Alert in Search. It is a tool that the company uses to put out emergency information about disasters like floods, fires, hurricanes or public health hazards.
The latest alert will be visible in both desktop and mobile versions of Google Search.
Coronavirus: The story so far
The deadly coronavirus outbreak has now become a global public health emergency. It is the sixth such emergency the WHO has declared in the past decade. The other five include: H1 virus (2009), West Africa Ebola outbreak (2013-2016), Polio (2014), Zika virus (2016), and the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (2019).
As per WHO statistics, the new coronavirus has already claimed 170 lives. Around 8,000 confirmed cases of the virus have been reported till now.
The latest countries to report confirmed cases of the coronavirus include: the US, India, Finland, and Philippines. In total, the virus has spread to 19 countries across the world.
Multiple tech companies including Google, Xiaomi, and Apple have closed offices as well as retail stores in China in response to the outbreak. The situation could also impact the upcoming MWC 2020 event in Barcelona, Spain, where a number of Chinese companies are expected to announce new devices.
We also hear that third-party cases for the Galaxy S20 series might be delayed due to offices and factories remaining shut. The Chinese government has extended the Chinese New Year holidays in order to contain the spread of the virus.

Nokia announces MWC 2020 press event, but what will it launch?

HMD Global has scheduled a press event for MWC 2020 where it’s expected to launch a number of Nokia phones. The event will take place on February 23 at 4PM local time (10AM ET). Meanwhile, MWC officially starts on February 24.
As you can see in the image above, the press invite for the Nokia event does not reveal much except for the date and time [the venue is redacted – ed]. However, we have some idea of what to expect from the house of HMD.
Nokia 9.2 PureView
It’s unlikely that we’ll witness the launch of a flagship Nokia phone at MWC 2020.
HMD has apparently delayed the so-called Nokia 9.2 PureView due to a last minute call on replacing an older chipset with the latest Snapdragon 865 flagship SoC.
Nokia 8.2
HMD Global previously confirmed a new 5G-ready smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 765G. The phone is reportedly called the Nokia 8.2 5G. Leaked details of the device suggest a glass-unibody design with a metallic frame.
The phone is expected to get a 6.2 inch IPS LCD display with HDR 10+ support.
Related: How low will 5G phone prices go in 2020?
It could house a 64MP quad rear camera setup with Zeiss optics and a 32MP selfie shooter.
The Nokia 8.2 5G is tipped to cost €459 (~$505). At this price, it will be one of the cheapest 5G phones out there.
Nokia 5.2
Aside from the Nokia 8.2 5G, we could also see the launch of the affordable Nokia 5.2 at MWC. Leaked specs of the phone include: a dated Snapdragon 632 chipset, a 6.2-inch LCD display, 16MP + 8MP dual primary cameras, an 8MP selfie shooter, and a 3,500mAh battery.
The Nokia 5.2 is expected to come with a price tag of €169 (~$186).
Nokia 1.3
The Nokia 1.3 is apparently an entry-level phone with 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. It could be Nokia’s 2020 Android Go phone running the Android 10 (Go Edition) update. Rumor has it that the device will run on a MediaTek chipset.
Besides the three smartphones, Nokia could also launch a feature phone and a fitness wearable at the event.
What do you think of Nokia’s rumored MWC 2020 lineup? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

September 21, 2019: Great news for all you OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro owners out there. The company is now rolling out the stable version of Android 10 to both devices.
October 2, 2019: Around two weeks ago, OnePlus started rolling out the Android 10 update for the OnePlus 7 series. However, according to users on Reddit as well as the official OnePlus forums, many people still don’t have the update. OnePlus did say the Android 10 upgrade would be a slow rollout, but that usually means over the span of a few days. At this point, it’s been 12 days since OnePlus announced the launch, which suggests there’s been some sort of delay. It’s possible OnePlus halted the rollout entirely. Read the full story here.
October 10, 2019: OnePlus has announced that every OnePlus device from the OnePlus 5 forward will get a stable version of Android 10. Older devices will need to wait quite a while to get it, but the update will come. November 12, 2019: Pete Lau has explained on the company’s forum why OnePlus 7 Pro 5G users have to wait until Q1 to get the Android 10 update. The executive said that 5G “uses a different communications module to establish a faster connection as opposed to 4G, and requires a deeper level of understanding and more rigorous tests, debugging and optimizations to be done to our software and hardware.” He also added that “to achieve the best experience possible, we had to make system optimizations from the fundamental system architecture, in order to deliver a truly fantastic 5G experience.” It looks like the process is a lot more complicated and time-consuming than it may look, which is why users will have to wait a few months for the update. You can read his full statement here.
November 15, 2019: The Android 10 update for the OnePlus 6 and 6T has been halted due to various bugs. OnePlus said it’s “working on a new build with more issue fixing.” The company didn’t specify when the update will roll out globally, only saying it’ll be available “once it’s ready.”

September 17, 2019: Looks like Samsung will soon release its first Android 10 beta update. Rumors have it that the company will roll it out in the US and Europe in early October. There’s no word on which devices will get it, but it’s a good bet we’ll see it on new flagship series such as the Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy S10.
October 23, 2019: Samsung has confirmed that the One UI 2.0 beta — based on Android 10 — for the Galaxy Note 10 series will come to the US. The rollout seems to be restricted to the regular Note 10 and Note 10 Plus models, with no mention of the 5G variants. Only unlocked phones will be compatible. In addition to the US, the beta program has also been confirmed for Germany.

The same update will likely hit devices in the US, Germany, and South Korea soon.
November 20, 2019: Samsung is shipping out the Android 10-based One UI 2.0 beta to the Galaxy Note 9 in South Korea. November 21, 2019: Samsung is pushing out the sixth beta update to the Galaxy S10 family. The update is apparently being rolled out to all countries where the Galaxy S10 beta is available — learn more here.

Samsung’s 2 018 and 2019 flagships will get updated to Android 10-based One UI 2.0 in January 2020 in both countries. This differs from the Israeli roadmap, which shows that the Galaxy S9 series will only get the update in April 2020, while the other 2018 and 2019 flagships get it in January.
The Indian roadmap also gives us update details regarding the Galaxy M series, noting that the Galaxy M20 and M30 will receive the Android 10 update in January 2020. Other M-series phones slated to get the update are the Galaxy M40 (March 2020), Galaxy M30s (April 2020), and Galaxy M10s (May 2020).
December 3, 2019: After being released in Germany a week ago, the Android 10-based One UI 2.0 update for the Galaxy S10 phones is now rolling out in a bunch of other countries. These include Algeria, Bangladesh, France, India, Ireland, Poland, Russia, Spain, the UAE, and the UK, among others.
