Google has finally announced the India launch date for the Pixel 4a. The mid-range Google phone that debuted in the US back in August will reach Indian shores on October 17. Google confirmed the Pixel 4a India launch while replying to a query on Twitter.

It’s possible that Google’s Twitter account jumped the gun because we were initially expecting the company to announce the India availability of the Pixel 4a during the Pixel hardware event that concluded a few hours back. When that didn’t happen, we thought Google would put out an official Pixel 4a India launch announcement at a later date. Looks like the cat is finally out of the bag.

Where to buy the Google Pixel 4a in India and for how much?

The Google Pixel 4a will be made available in India through Flipkart. The e-commerce platform has already put up a dedicated page for the phone on its website. However, it doesn’t mention the October 17 launch date just yet.

The Pixel 4a is a mid-tier smartphone that features the Snapdragon 730 chipset. Unlike its recently launched successors — the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 — the phone does not support 5G connectivity. Not that India has any 5G networks to speak of. The good thing is that it comes with the same primary camera as the more premium Google phones so expect to take some quality photos with the device.

It’s also cheaper than the new Google phones at $349. This translates to somewhere around Rs. 25,000 in India. However, Google phones are usually marked up in India compared to their international counterparts, so the phone could cost a bit more than the direct price conversion.

The Pixel 4a will launch in India in a single 6GB RAM and 128GB storage model. Buyers will also get three-month free trials of YouTube Premium and Google One with the phone.

Thinking of waiting for the Pixel 4a 5G or the Pixel 5 instead? Don’t. Google has already announced that it won’t launch the phones in India.

Chromecast with Google TV vs the “old” Chromecast series

In 2013, Google launched the first version of its Chromecast TV dongle. It was designed to cast smartphone apps, including video streaming apps, to big-screen televisions. Seven years later, the market for streaming TV apps has changed, and Google is changing with it. Today, it officially announced Chromecast with Google TV.

So what are the similarities and the differences of Chromecast with Google TV vs Chromecast? Good question.  As you will see, the original Chromecast is still very useful. However, the new Chromecast with Google TV offers a lot more, and it’s not that much more expensive.

Chromecast with Google TV vs Chromecast: Features

Back in 2013, smart televisions were still something of a novelty. The first Chromecast allowed TV owners to quickly turn it into a smart television, and inexpensively. If you had a smartphone, and your apps supported Chromecast, you could connect the dongle to your TV’s HMDI port. Then you could cast and watch movies, play games, and more from your phone to your TV.

Later versions of Chromecast did basically the same thing as the original. However, the current third-generation Chromecast streamed smartphone content at 1080p resolution. The more expensive Chromecast Ultra. which launched in 2016, increased the streaming resolution to 4K. It also added support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision video formats and an Ethernet port. It also allowed users to stream high-end PC and console games to their TV via the Google Stadia service.

The new Chromecast with Google TV is a very different device. While it can still cast smartphone apps to your TV, it has Android TV built-in as well. That means you can watch streaming TV and apps directly, with no smartphone required. It comes with its own hardware remote for controlling those apps. It also supports Google Assistant to control apps with your voice, again via the remote.

In fact, for this product, Google has installed a new UI on top of Android TV. That’s where the “Google TV” part of the brand comes in. It allows you to watch movies and TV shows across several streaming apps and services on one screen, rather than switching between apps. It’s very similar to what you will find on the Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV apps. The device supports up to 4k resolution, along with HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision video formats.

Unfortunately, the new Chromecast with Google TV does not yet support the Google Stadia game streaming service. That support is supposed to be added sometime in 2021. If you want Stadia gaming on your big-screen TV right now, you need to either keep or purchase the Chromecast Ultra.

One other minor addition to Chromecast with Google TV are color choices. You have snow, sunrise, and sky colors to pick from.

Original article: September 9, 2020 (3:25 AM ET): On the back of the Amazfit Band 5‘s recent debut, wearable maker Huami has now officially announced the Amazfit Neo. The wearable has appeared in online stores around the end of August, but the device has now received its official send-off by the Chinese company.

Heavily inspired by classic digital watches of old with some modern touches, the Neo sports a 1.2-inch monochrome LCD display housed in a chunky plastic body.  The always-on screen should allow for easy reading in direct sunlight but also sports a backlight for reading in dimmer environments.

The screen doesn’t support touch inputs though, so you’ll have to navigate its software using four physical buttons mounted on its flanks. These details likely add to its long battery life. Huami claims typical users will see around four weeks between charges from the 160mAh battery. If you use the watch sparingly, that figure can be extended to well beyond a month.

The Neo also seems to be a fairly capable fitness tracker on paper, featuring around-the-clock heart-rate monitoring, activity tracking, sleep tracking, and 5 ATM water resistance. There’s no onboard GPS for avid runners though, but the Neo does support basic call and message notifications.

The Amazfit Neo is currently priced at 279 yuan (~$40) in China but is also available for $49 on Amazfit’s AliExpress store.

Google has faced several legal challenges in recent years regarding its search and advertising business, and it looks like the US is next in line to take aim at the company.

According to Reuters, citing three sources familiar with the matter, the US Department of Justice is set to file a lawsuit against Google as soon as next week. It’s alleged that the department is also calling on state attorneys general to sign onto the suit.

The lawsuit reportedly accuses Google of trying to put search rivals such as Bing at a disadvantage. More specifically, it’s claimed that Google deprives rivals of “the data about users and user preferences” that these rivals need to improve their services and advertising.

Reuters says the Department of Justice is also focusing on search advertising that appears under Google’s search box, noting that Google controls these search boxes and the associated tools.

Recent actions against Google

This wouldn’t be the first time Google came under fire for its search and advertising practices, as the European Commission levied a €1.49 billion (~$1.7 billion) fine against Google last year for online advertising abuse.

The EU found that Google barred rival search advertisers — such as Bing and Yahoo — from displaying ads on publishers’ search pages. The EU also found that publishers had to get written approval from Google before making visual changes to rival ads.

Google was also fined almost $5 billion by the EU in 2018 for abusing its dominant position in the Android space. The EU took issue with Google requiring Android OEMs to bundle the Chrome browser and Google Search app if they want to install Google Play Services on their devices. The European Commission also said Google incentivized some manufacturers and operators to exclusively pre-install Google Search, and that it prevented partner OEMs from releasing devices with a forked version of Android.

The Poco X3 makes a big trade-off in India, but is it for the best?

It’s taken Poco two years since the launch of the original Poco F1 to come up with a fresh new design. Amidst widespread criticism for cribbing Xiaomi designs for the Poco X2 and the Poco M2 Pro, the sub-brand has finally come up with a smartphone that is uniquely Poco — the Poco X3.

The Poco X3 was announced earlier this month and is available in Europe as the Poco X3 NFC. India, however, gets a variation on the global model with some notable changes under the hood.

Poco X3 India vs Poco X3 NFC: What’s the difference?

Right off the bat, if you’re after camera samples or performance figures you can read our in-depth thoughts on the Poco X3 NFC model in our full written review or by watching the video at the top of the page. For the most part, differences between the Indian and European edition of the Poco X3 are limited to two key areas — NFC and battery capacity.

To start with the Indian Poco X3 does not include NFC. This might seem like a glaring omission, but with digital payments in India bypassing tap-to-pay and moving straight to QR code based transactions, it makes for an obvious cost-saving measure. Still, NFC makes it easy to quickly connect to Bluetooth speakers and headphones, and I found myself missing the feature.

However, the loss of one feature has let Poco add in a major upgrade to the battery capacity. The Poco X3 in India packs a 6,000mAh cell which is a significant step-up over the 5,160mAh battery in the NFC edition.

In our review, we found that the Poco X3 could easily power through two days of use on a single charge. Paired up with the efficient chipset, my experience with the Indian variant suggests that even three days wouldn’t be entirely out of reach. Charging speeds remain the same 33W across the two devices.

Switching over to the software, while the Poco X3 ships with a fair few pre-loaded applications, most of them can be uninstalled. Additionally, I haven’t noticed any ads in the interface so far. While my colleague, Ryan, understandably pointed this out as a major flaw in his review, it appears that Poco is sticking to its promise of not including ads in India.

There's a price to be paid for that large battery.

On the design side of things, there are subtle differences in weight and thickness. The Indian variant of the Poco X3 measures 10.1mm compared to the 9.4mm thickness of the global version. This might seem like a small difference, but it makes the X3 positively chubby.

The larger battery also tacks on an extra ten grams of weight. The 225g weight makes the Poco X3 a particularly hefty device to hold and this becomes very evident when holding up the phone for hours on end.

Should you buy the Poco X3 in India?

The Poco X3 is priced starting Rs. 16,999 ($231) for the 64GB variant, and goes all the way to Rs. 19,999 (~$271) for the top-tier variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.

The Poco X3 goes up against alternatives like the Realme 7 that sports a 90Hz panel and a 5,000mAh battery, compared to the 120Hz display and 6,000mAh cell on the X3, at about the same price.

Meanwhile, the Redmi Note 9 Pro also has a smaller battery and not as fast chipset making the Poco X3 a better overall package for most users.

Polarising design aside, the Poco X3 is a return to form for the company. Between the packed spec sheet, 120Hz display, and tremendous battery life, Poco has managed to create a device that can go head to head with tough competition. However, the real trump card here is the lack of ads. Competing options from stablemate Xiaomi and competitors like Realme have opted for interstitial ads to help offset costs, the lack of these in the Poco X3 in India goes a long way towards making the Poco X3 an even better buy.

The Poco X3 NFC brings a lot to the table for Rs. 16,990. You've got a Snapdragon 732G chipset, 6.67-inch 120Hz LCD screen, and a huge 6,000mAh battery. Toss in 33W charging, IP53 splash resistance, and solid camera credentials and you have a full-featured budget device.

Xiaomi launches massive 82-inch 8K TV with mini-LED tech, 5G connectivity

• Xiaomi has launched two 82-inch TVs, as part of its Mi Master series.
• The headliner TV features mini-LED technology with 8K resolution and 5G connectivity.
• It’s currently available in China for ~$7,200.

If you feel 40-inch displays are just too small for your living room, Xiaomi might have a solution. The company has launched two 82-inch Mi Master series TVs in China.

The headliner TV wears Xiaomi’s Extreme Commemorative Edition moniker. It packs an 8K panel with mini-LED technology which gives the display 960 light control zones across its surface. The technology allows for higher contrast ratios and lower overall power consumption. Speaking of power draw, this panel sucks up to 700W, so a lengthy power bill is something users will also need to budget for.

Nevertheless, the Extreme Commemorative Edition also sports a 120Hz refresh rate with MEMC (Motion Estimation, Motion Compensation) image smoothing tech, 98% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut, and a built-in media player powered by a Novatek chipset with 4GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. There’s 5G connectivity too, a Gigabit LAN port, and an HDMI 2.1 port.

The cheaper display features 4K resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate and MEMC image smoothing tech. This should make it a nifty pairing with the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5. It’s HDMI 2.1 enabled too, while Dolby Vision is also supported. You’ll also get 93% color gamut coverage in the DCI-P3 spectrum and a host of smart TV features enabled by Xiaomi’s MIUI for TV. It’s powered by a MediaTek chipset with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

As you can probably imagine, an 82-inch 8K TV with 5G doesn’t come cheap. You can currently snag one for 49,999 yuan (~$7,327) in China. If pixels aren’t a priority, the cheaper 4K panel will set you back 9,999 yuan (~$1,465).

When will your phone get the Android 11 update? (Updated September 29)

The stable Android 11 update is finally here for select devices. Google officially released the OS today and is rolling it out to its Pixel phones. The search giant is joined by OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Realme this year, all of which are releasing the update for a few of its phones on day one.

But what about other handsets from companies like Samsung, Sony, and LG? Which models will get the Android 11 update and when? While most manufacturers haven’t announced their release schedules yet, we can get a good idea of what to expect by looking at how fast they shipped out previous versions of Android.

Asus Android 11 update

Asus was surprisingly fast with updating its flagship Zenfone 6 smartphone with Android 10, releasing the update just two months after the OS made its debut. So if the timeframe doesn’t change this year, the company should ship out the first stable Android 11 update sometime in November for the Zenfone 7 series.

Unfortunately, Asus wasn’t as fast when it came to updating its gaming-centric ROG Phone 2. The update was rolled out back in March, six months after Android 10 made its debut. We hope Asus will speed things up this year for the ROG Phone 3, but don’t hold your breath.

• Stable Android 11 release ETA: November 2020

September 15, 2020: According to a post on Asus’ community forum, the company is now rolling out Android 11 beta to Zenfone 6 owners who have registered for the beta program. The update comes in at around 1.3GB. It’s interesting that Asus’ 2019 flagship got the update before its successor — the Zenfone 7 series — did.

September 23, 2020: Asus has kicked off a public Android 11 beta testing program for the Zenfone 7 series. To sign up, go to Settings > System > System update and tap on the gear icon in the top-right corner. Then select the “Enroll in the Beta Test Program” option and follow on-screen instructions.

Google Android 11 update

As expected, Google’s Pixel phones are among the first ones to get the latest version of Android. The company started rolling out the update on day one as usual, but unlike with Android 10, not all Pixel phones will get it — learn more below.

September 8, 2020: Google is rolling out Android 11 to all of its Pixel phones, except for the original Pixel and Pixel XL that were released way back in 2016. This was expected since Google only guarantees three major OS updates for each Pixel phone.

September 17, 2020: Android 11 has now finally been released for the Pixel phones in India. The rollout comes after Google initially delayed the update in India by a week — learn more here.

HTC Android 11 update

HTC and software updates don’t go great together. Although the company doesn’t have a lot of phones in its lineup, it’s quite slow when it comes to shipping out the latest versions of Android.

The company released the first Android 10 update back in March, six months after the OS was announced. We don’t have any reason to think anything will change with Android 11, so if you have an HTC phone, you’re in for a wait.

Huawei Android 11 update

The situation with Huawei is a bit tricky because of the US trade ban that prevents the company from using Google services. A lot of Huawei phones will get Android 11, but some of them will come without the Play Store, Gmail, and the rest of Google apps.

These are phones like the P40 Pro, which shipped without these apps in the first place. Older phones like the P30 should also get the latest Android, but they should keep access to Google’s apps and services that were on the phone at launch. It’s a similar situation for recent phones from Huawei’s sub-brand, Honor, which will update its own Magic UI skin with Android 11 at some point.

Based on Huawei’s track record, we can expect the first stable update of its EMUI skin with Android 11 to be released around two months after the initial launch. Huawei usually released its updates in China first, with a global release following shortly after.

LG Android 11 update

Based on the company’s track record, the first LG phones are expected to get Android 11 in December. These devices will likely be the LG V60 and G8. Others should follow relatively shortly.

Keep in mind that the company generally releases software updates in its home country of South Korea first, before expanding them to other markets. This means that, depending on where you live, you may have to wait even longer (a month or so) to take Android 11 for a spin on your LG device.

Motorola Android 11 update

Motorola isn’t known for being fast with updates. Looking at its Android 10 release timeline, we can expect the first update to be released towards the end of the year, in December to be more exact.

Motorola has a habit of first releasing updates for a number of its phones in Brazil, before rolling it out in other regions. With that in mind, you may have to wait even longer for an update if you’re from the US or Europe.

Nokia Android 11 update

Nokia is great with software updates. It updated its entire lineup to Android 10 last year, and it was quite fast doing so. One of the reasons for being fast is that a lot of Nokia phones are part of the Android One family, which generally get updates fast because the manufacturer doesn’t have to optimize the software as much.

The first Nokia phone received the Android 10 update around a month after the OS was released. We expect the story to be similar this year, meaning that Nokia should push out the first stable Android 11 update sometime in October. The unofficial Nokia roadmap confirms — learn more below — that the first update should be released sometime in the last quarter of the year.

OnePlus has always been fast with updates and the trend is set to continue with Android 11. The company released an open beta build of the Android 11-based Oxygen OS 11 for the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro on day one. There’s no word on when the stable version will be released, but based on previous years, we expect it to become available by the end of the month or at the beginning of October.

Although unconfirmed, we expect all OnePlus phones from the OnePlus 6 to get the latest version of Android. After the OnePlus 8, the next phones in like to get the update are most likely the OnePlus Nord and the OnePlus 7T series.

Realme Android 11 update

Realme knows that fast updates are important, which is why it rolled out a closed beta version of Android 11 on day one — see more info below. During the launch of Realme UI 2.0, the company also shared that it will ship out the first stable Android 11 update to the X50 Pro at the end of November.

This means that the company is speeding things up this year, as it wasn’t as fast with Android 10. It shipped out the first stable update back in January, four months after Android 10 was officially unveiled.

Samsung Android 11 update

Samsung is far from the quickest company out there when it comes to Android updates, but it has gotten faster over the years. The tech giant hasn’t shared a release schedule yet, but based on how it handled Android 10 updates, we expect it to release the first stable Android 11 update in select markets by the end of November.

The Galaxy S20 and Note 20 phones will be among the first to get the latest version of Android, with a bunch of other Galaxy models following soon after. Software support for older Samsung flagships like the Note 9 and S9 stopped with Android 10, so these devices won’t be upgraded to a One UI-flavored version of Android 11. Older Samsung high-end phones were only guaranteed two major OS upgrades, while newer ones bump the number up to three.

September 9, 2020: Samsung has kicked off its closed beta program for One UI 3.0 based on Android 11, which is aimed at developers. The program is available for the Galaxy S20 phones in South Korea and the US. But keep in mind that in the US, only unlocked and T-Mobile/Sprint phones are eligible to participate — learn more here.

Sony Android 11 update

Sony’s latest Xperia 1 II will likely be the company’s first phone to get the Android 11 update, followed by the slightly older Xperia 1 and Xperia 5. The update should then also make its way to a few older flagships as well as a number of mid-rangers.

Sony hasn’t shared its Android 11 plans with the public yet, but we expect the tech giant to ship out its first stable update sometime in December, just like it did with Android 10. But if you own a mid-range Sony phone that will likely get the latest version of Android, you’re in for a wait. Last year’s Xperia 10 and 10 Plus got Android 10 back in May.

Vivo Android 11 update

Vivo is quite slow when it comes to updates and we don’t expect that to change with Android 11.

The company rolled out the first stable Android 10 update to one of its flagship phones seven months after the OS was released. If Vivo sticks to the same timeline with Android 11, we can expect the first stable update to be released in April.

Xiaomi Android 11 update

Xiaomi is among the companies that released a beta version of Android 11 on the day of its release. Unfortunately, the company didn’t share a date on which the stable version of the OS will start rolling out. Based on its track record, we expect a stable version of Xiaomi’s MIUI with Android 11 build to hit the Mi 10 phones by the end of September or at the beginning of October.

A lot of other Xiaomi phones — as well as devices from its Poco and Redmi sub-brands — will follow soon after, although we don’t know exactly which specific models will get the update.

September 8, 2020: Xiaomi has released the beta version of Android 11 for the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro phones. In a statement to Android Authority, the company said that the update is available for users who participate in their beta program on Global and China ROMs.
