The Snapdragon-powered Honor 50 series gets a launch date

Honor 50 series color tease weibo

Credit: Weibo/Honor
  • Honor has revealed a June 16 launch date for the new Honor 50 series.
  • A teaser video gives us a fleeting glimpse of the design.
  • The company will presumably show off a new Honor Magic line as well.

Huawei sold off its Honor brand last year as the heat from US sanctions became too much to bear, but it looks like the newly independent brand is back on its feet. The first proper phones as a result of this arrangement will be the Honor 50 series, and we finally have a launch date.

Honor confirmed on Weibo that the new series will be launching on June 16, while also posting a video that gives us a tantalizing glimpse at one of the phones. Check it out below.

The video gives us a look at part of the camera housing as well as the colorway. The color scheme looks particularly dazzling, consisting of blue with green flecks of some kind. So those looking for a departure from the usual black, gray, and rose gold colorways might want to keep an eye on this one.

The newly independent brand already said the Honor 50 series will be powered by the new Snapdragon 778G processor, which should make for a significant improvement over the Snapdragon 765G SoC. Honor also previously confirmed that it’ll launch a new Honor Magic series featuring “the most premium Qualcomm chipset” — all but actually saying the Snapdragon 888 SoC. So we’re expecting to see this series at the launch event as well.

Alienware’s X series gaming laptops meld sleek bodies with smarter cooling

alienware x15 x17 1
Credit: Alienware
  • Alienware has announced its new X-series gaming laptop line.
  • The X15 and X17 sport 11th Gen Intel CPUs and Nvidia’s new RTX GPU lineup.
  • Both machines will be available in June, with prices starting at $1,999.

Dell’s Alienware division is freshening up its gaming laptop offerings this month. Just a few weeks after the m15 R6, the brand is now launching the X15 and X17 gaming laptops packing new cooling tech, slimmer bodies, and more powerful hardware.

While Alienware’s previous laptops aren’t known for being slight, the X series seems to be a concerted effort by the brand to change this perception. The X15 is just 16.3mm thick including the lid, with a maximum weight of 2.36 kg. The X17 also measures a little over 20mm thick with a 3.2 kg curb weight. Both figures may still seem hefty, but Alienware’s done a good job keeping weight down considering the hardware on offer.

Alienware X15

alienware x15 1

Credit: Alienware

Let’s start with the Alienware X15. The smaller laptop gives buyers three display options headlined by a 15.6-inch 2,560 x 1,440 240Hz panel. This option also supports Nvidia G-Sync, features 400 nits of maximum brightness, and 99% coverage of the DCI-P9 gamut. There’s also a 1080p display option with a 1ms response time and a 360Hz refresh rate. Finally, there’s a standard 1080p screen with a 165Hz refresh rate.

To drive these pixels, users get a choice between Nvidia’s RTX 3060, RTX 3070, or RTX 3080 GPUs. These can be fitted alongside an Intel Core i7-11800H or an i9-11900H. To complete the silicon on offer, users can opt for up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM and up to 4TB of PCIe storage in RAID 0.

See also: The best laptops you can buy in 2021

As for I/O, there are plenty of options at the rear of the machine. This includes two USB-C ports, a single USB-A, a microSD card slot, and an HDMI 2.1 port. A power port and 3.5mm headphone jack reside on the left and right sides, respectively.

Alienware also brings improvements to the X15’s cooling system. The brand’s new Element 31 interface uses a “gallium-silicone matrix” touting better thermal resistance than the previous tech. This is only available on the RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 configs, though. Nevertheless, all three models pack four fans and individual smart fan control.

Other niceties include a 720p webcam with Windows Hello support, dual microphones, Wi-Fi 6E support, and Bluetooth 5.2. Power is provided by an 87Whr battery and a 240W power brick.

Alienware X17

alienware x17 1

Credit: Alienware

If the 15.6-inch display option is still too small, the Alienware X17 is a better bet. Users can pick between three 17.3-inch panels, including the range-topping 2,560 x 1,440 panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. A 1080p panel with a 1ms response time and 360Hz refresh rate also features, while a 165Hz option rounds out the lineup.

Internally, the X17 offers the same CPU, GPU, and storage options as its smaller sibling. Users do have the choice to double the available RAM to 64GB, though.

The Alienware X17 also features extended I/O options. Like the X15, the bulk of the ports reside on the X17’s rear, with only a power port and 3.5mm headphone jack located on the sides. The X17 does have enough space for a dedicated Ethernet port, good for 2.5Gbps. Two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, a microSD card slot, a Mini DisplayPort 1.4, and an HDMI 2.1 port also feature.

While the X15 settles for Alienware’s 1.5mm travel keyboard, users can also have the X17 with CherryMX switches. These switches pack a few more millimeters of travel but the keyboard does offer Alienware’s individual key customizations, too.

Finally, the X17 also gains an 87Whr battery but an optional and larger 330W power supply is also on offer.

Alienware X15 and X17: Price and availability

The Alienware X15 will be available from $1,999, while its 17.3-inch sibling starts at $2,099. As for availability, both laptops go on sale from June 1 in limited configs initially, but more options will be available from June 15.

Samsung phones to get ray tracing, variable rate shading with next Exynos chip

AMD Samsung Exynos chip announcement Computex 2021

Credit: AMD
  • AMD has announced that Samsung will share more details of its Exynos chip with an AMD GPU later this year.
  • The new flagship SoC will feature ray tracing and variable rate shading capabilities.

Back in 2019, Samsung partnered with AMD to bring next-gen GPU architecture to mobile devices. Now, we may finally have a timeframe as to when we’ll see the long-awaited flagship Exynos chipset with an AMD GPU.

During her keynote address at the ongoing virtual Computex 2021 conference, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su teased a few additional details about the upcoming Exynos mobile SoC with AMD graphics.

“AMD is partnering with Samsung on its next-generation Exynos SoC, which will feature custom AMD RDNA 2 architecture-based graphics IP that brings ray tracing and variable rate shading capabilities to flagship mobile devices,” AMD noted its Computex press release.

Dr. Su also announced that Samsung would share more details about the new 5G chipset “later this year.” Given the statement, Samsung may make the follow-up to the Exynos 2100 official within the year. That means we can expect the new AMD-powered silicon to run the Galaxy S series flagships that launch in the first half of 2022.

Samsung had also previously confirmed that its next flagship Exynos chip, a follow-up to the Exynos 2100, would come with the AMD mobile GPU.

A recent report also suggested that the rumored Exynos 2200 chip with the AMD GPU could come to laptops as early as this year.

Also read: AMD hints at how RDNA could beat Qualcomm’s Adreno GPU

It’s too soon to say if the AMD GPU will bring about a big boost to the Exynos platform. However, graphics performance has always been a weak point for Samsung’s chips and we hope to see an improvement with the new partnership in place.

  • The phone is powered by MediaTek’s flagship Dimensity 1200 chipset.
  • Expect to pay a starting price of Rs 26,999 (~$372).

Flagships powered by MediaTek have been a rarity, despite the firm taking the chipset crown in 2020. Fortunately, Indian consumers can soon get their hands on one as Realme launches the X7 Max 5G in the market.

The new phone is powered by a brand-new Dimensity 1200 chipset, featuring a tri-cluster octa-core CPU (1x Cortex-A78 at 3GHz, 3x Cortex-A78 at 2.6GHz, and four Cortex-A55 at 2GHz). The 6nm processor also packs the same Mali-G77 MP9 GPU as last year’s Dimensity 1000 series, 5G+5G dual-SIM capabilities, a hexa-core APU for machine learning, and software-driven ray tracing support.

The Realme X7 Max 5G also serves up a 6.43-inch 120Hz OLED panel, a 4,500mAh battery, and 50W wired charging. Shifting to photography, the handset packs a triple rear camera, featuring a 64MP main camera (IMX682), 8MP ultra-wide lens, and 2MP macro sensor. Selfies are handled by a 16MP snapper.

Besides the mid-range 5G silicon, the report alleges that the OnePlus Nord CE would get a triple camera setup comprising a 64MP main camera. Information about the other two sensors isn’t available. The phone is also expected to sport a 16MP selfie shooter.

Elsewhere, the OnePlus Nord CE might get a 6.43-inch AMOLED display just like the original Nord. It looks like OnePlus will stick to its promised 90Hz screen refresh rate.

There are still many specs missing from the leak. We previously got a glimpse of some leaked renders of the Nord CE, suggesting that its height and weight have been slightly reduced compared to the Nord N10. It’s also believed to come with a single punch-hole on the top left corner of the display and carry a 3.5mm headphone jack.

OnePlus Nord CE availability

According to OnePlus dedicated website for the launch of the Nord CE, pre-orders for the phone will start on June 11. It will be available on open sale starting June 16.

You told us: Samsung really dropped the ball with its Upcycling program

Samsung Galaxy S9 smartphone in sunrise gold in a person's hand.

Companies rarely focus on programs and products that won’t guarantee them revenue. It seems that this fact of business is what “ruined” Samsung’s Upcycling program, at least according to DIY repair website iFixit.

While the program started with promise and had grand future designs, Samsung ultimately canned an expanded program due to the lack of a clear revenue plan.

With iFixit clearly perturbed by Samsung’s change of heart, we wanted to gauge your thoughts about the fiasco. Did Samsung drop the ball with its Upcycling program? Here’s how you polled.

Do you think Samsung dropped the ball with its Galaxy Upcycling program?

Results

According to a poll on our website, nearly 90% of readers believe Samsung floundered its Upcycling program. Around 10.4% of readers find no fault with the Korean company’s handling of the program.

If implemented correctly, the Upcycling program would’ve allowed unlocked bootloaders, opening up the opportunity for custom ROMs more suited to specific use cases. Essentially, it would’ve been a more serious effort than Samsung’s current app-based solution. Understandably, some readers find Samsung’s efforts lacking.

Nevertheless, Samsung not throwing its weight behind the program doesn’t stop users from repurposing phones. AA readers either keep old phones as backups, sell them, or hand them off to relatives. However, about one in every two readers offload their device rather than keeping it.

Here’s what you told us

  • Kobus Swart: This is why I consider buying Apple after being with Samsung since 2012.
  • meh…: These are businesses that only care about profit so it’s no surprise that Apple and Samsung don’t give a crap about after sale support unless it’s paid for and therefore a contractual obligation, through the extended warranty and care programs.

That’s it for this poll. Thanks for your votes and comments. If you have any additional thoughts about Samsung’s Upcycling program or the poll results, be sure to drop them down below.

Google reportedly hid privacy settings on Android, urged OEMs to do the same

Google Pixel 5 front
Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority
  • Newly unredacted court documents reveal the steps Google has taken to maintain access to location data.
  • Google purportedly buried privacy settings deeper within Android’s settings menu and pressured OEMs to do the same.
  • Employees also took issue with the inability to use location data in a third-party app without Google gaining this info.

Google made a number of privacy-related announcements at Google I/O earlier this month, such as a new privacy dashboard on Android and the quick-fire ability to delete the last 15 minutes of your web browsing activity. But recently unearthed court documents have revealed that Google actually made it tougher for Android users to find popular privacy settings.

Unredacted court documents spotted by Insider show that Google tested versions of Android that made privacy settings easier to find. When users started taking advantage of these easier-to-find settings, Google purportedly viewed it as a “problem” and buried these privacy settings deeper within the platform’s settings menu.

The documents also show Google collected location data even when users turned off these settings, and that it pressured Android OEMs such as LG and others to hide popular privacy settings because people used them.

Discontent within Google

Google’s privacy moves were also viewed in a negative light by some employees, with at least one employee lambasting the fact that a user can’t get their own location without also giving that information to Google.

“Fail #2: *I* should be able to get *my* location on *my* phone without sharing that information with Google (sic),” an employee was quoted as saying. The employee said this could be how Apple is “eating our lunch,” adding the iPhone maker was “much more likely” to let people use location-based apps and services without giving that information to Apple itself.

“So there is no way to give a third-party app your location and not Google?” another employee was quoted as saying. “This doesn’t sound like something we would want on the front page of the (New York Times).”

Former Google Maps executive Jack Menzel also highlighted the extent of Google’s thirst for location data. He noted during a deposition that the only way Google couldn’t figure out a user’s home and work location was if the user set their home and work as other random locations instead.

The documents seem to suggest that Google’s recent privacy push isn’t done entirely out of the goodness of its heart. Do you think Google is doing a good job of privacy on Android though? Let us know by voting in the poll above.

PSA: Today is the last day of free unlimited Google Photos storage

Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
  • Today is the last day you can enjoy free unlimited Google Photos storage for high-quality images.
  • Starting June 1, your high-quality and express-quality photos will account towards your free 15GB Google account storage.
  • Here’s everything you need to know before the deadline hits.

The dreaded day for Google Photos users is here. Today, May 31, is the last day of you enjoying free unlimited high-quality storage in Google Photos. Starting tomorrow, June 1, all your high-quality and express-quality images will count towards your free 15GB Google account storage.

Once you reach that 15GB limit, you will have to start deleting some of your photos or other Google Drive content to free up space. Alternatively, you can also purchase a Google One plan to increase your Google account’s storage up to 2TB.

If you are a Google Photos user who will be impacted by the new storage policy, here are some frequently asked questions you may want answers to before the June 1 deadline.

Google Photos storage change: FAQs

What will happen to my photos and videos backed up before June 1?

The good news is that your high-quality and express-quality photos and videos backed up before June 1, 2021, won’t count toward your 15GB Google Account storage. So if you still haven’t backed up some images, now is the time to do so.

What about storage space for original quality photos and videos?

Original quality photos and videos will continue to count toward your Google account storage. Photos backed up in original quality and then compressed to high quality after June 1, 2021, will also count toward your Google account storage.

How do I find out how much storage I have left on my Google account?

You can use Google’s storage management tool to know how much storage space you have left, clean up storage, delete blurry photos and screenshots, and get more storage.

How much do Google One plans cost if I have to upgrade my Google account storage?

Google One plan prices vary across different regions. If you’re in the US, Google One plans start at $1.99/month for 100GB of storage. You also have an option to get 200GB storage for $2.99/month or 2TB storage for $9.99/month.

What are some of the best Google Photos alternatives?

There are many good options available if you’re planning to jump ship. Here’s our list of the best Google Photos alternatives you can get.

I am a Pixel owner. Will Google Photos storage changes also apply to me?

If you have a Google Pixel 5 or an earlier device, you’ll continue to receive free unlimited storage for photos and videos backed up from your Pixel devices. Pixel 3 owners can still upload unlimited original quality images to Google Photos through January 31, 2022, when it will switch to unlimited high-quality pictures. Pixel 2 owners have already switched to unlimited high-quality uploads as of January 16, 2021. Those who own the original Pixel will be able to continue uploading at original quality with no limits.

What happens to my photos if I’m over the limit?

If you exceed your 15GB storage quota, it means you’re using more storage space than you have available. Google says if you’re over quota for 24 months, your content may be impacted.

Alleged Huawei Watch 3 spy shots give us a brief look at Harmony OS

  • New purported spy images of the Huawei Watch 3 series have leaked.
  • The shots showcase Harmony OS, including the home screen and notification shade.
  • Huawei will launch the Watch 3 series later this week.

The Huawei Watch 3 series is to make its grand debut later this week alongside Harmony OS. But just ahead of its launch, a new set of alleged spy images of the watches has surfaced.

Spotted by ITHome, the publication notes that “a number of digital bloggers” published apparent snaps of the Huawei Watch 3 and Watch 3 Pro in an offline store. It fails to cite the original “netizen” source, though.

Nevertheless, the spy shots do showcase a few interesting features. For one, Huawei will seemingly keep the round face of the previous Watch GT 2 line but use just one knob dial positioned at the top right. A secondary flat button resides underneath it. Overall, it makes for a sleeker facade.

huawei watch 3 ithome leak 6 huawei watch 3 ithome leak 5 huawei watch 3 ithome leak 2

We also get a glimpse of the rumored packaging with its “Powered by Harmony OS” insignia. The OS itself is also seemingly on show on the watches. The home screen is visible in one shot, complete with time, date, and direct shortcuts to apps. In another, the notification shade is visible, alerting to missed calls and WeChat messages. Another shot also shows the watch taking a reading, possibly for SpO2.

We don’t get a look at the apps menu, so there’s no way to draw comparisons to previous UI leaks. Nevertheless, Harmony OS seemingly won’t bring huge visual differences over Lite OS on the watches. One rumored benefit may include the availability of more apps — something that previous Huawei watches sorely missed.

Huawei will debut the Watch 3 series on June 2 alongside its new OS, so expect more concrete details to emerge later this week.

Get a good look at the features of the Sony WF-1000XM4 in this leaked video

  • A promotional video of the Sony WF-1000XM4 has leaked.
  • It confirms all the specs and features of the true wireless earbuds.

The Sony WF-1000XM4 are the most hotly anticipated true wireless earbuds right now. While Sony is yet to announce a launch or release date, multiple leaks have already outed their refreshed, more compact design as well as upgraded specifications. Now, a leaked promotional video spotted on Reddit by SparrowsNews shows the WF-1000XM4 in action, confirming all of its new features.

The video starts by teasing the “industry-leading noise cancellation” of the WF-1000XM4. It also shows that the earbuds will feature Sony’s integrated V1 processor, new drivers for a fuller, richer sound, support for LDAC and Hi-Res Audio, and DSEE EXTREME AI technology to reproduce frequency responses of the original sound source lost during compression.

Further, the leaked video of the WF-1000XM4 shows that it borrows some features from the Sony WH-1000XM4 wireless headset. For instance, you’ll get the Speak-To-Chat function that automatically pauses playback when you start a conversation. You’ll also get Sony’s Adaptive Sound Control for adjusting ambient sound levels based on your environment.

The WF-1000XM4 will feature bone conduction sensors to detect speech vibrations, Google Assistant and Alexa support, wireless charging, and IPX4 certification for protection against splashes.

The text in the video confirms that the earbuds can function for eight hours at a stretch with ANC switched on. The battery life can further increase to 16 hours with the charging case. So in total, you can get 24 hours of playback with ANC.

With noise-cancelling turned off, you can seemingly get 12 hours of playback from the buds alone and another 24 hours with the charging case. That’s a whopping 36 hours of usage.

Clearly, the new Sony buds are all set to give the AirPods Pro a run for their money. They won’t come cheap, though. The previous iteration of the true wireless earbuds launched for $230. With the new design and features, we expect the Sony WF-1000XM4 to launch around $250 or maybe a bit more.

Xiaomi introduces new 200W HyperCharge tech: 0% to 100% in just 8 minutes

Xiaomi 200w wired hypercharge tech

  • Xiaomi has introduced new 200W wired and 120W wireless HyperCharge tech.
  • The new wired charging solution can top up a 4,000mAh battery in eight minutes.
  • The wireless HyperCharge implementation can fully charge a device in 15 minutes.

Xiaomi has been at the top of its game as far as developing new charging tech is concerned. The company has once again shared a milestone in the smartphone charging space by introducing the fastest 200W wired and 120W wireless charging.

The company calls the new solution HyperCharge, same as what its offshoot Black Shark calls its charging tech. Xiaomi claims its 200W HyperCharge tech can top up a 4,000mAh battery to 100% in just eight minutes. Meanwhile, the new 120W HyperCharge method takes only 15 minutes to fully charge a device.

Xiaomi also posted a video of how HyperCharge works on a custom build of the Mi 11 Pro. Sure enough, the phone reaches 50% capacity in just three minutes, going all the way up to 100% in a few seconds under eight minutes. The video also shows the Mi 11 Pro wirelessly charging at 120W speed, reaching a 10% charge in just a minute and 50% in seven minutes.

There’s no word on when Xiaomi will implement its new 200W wired and 120W wireless HyperCharge tech on actual phones. In theory, such fast charging could produce more heat and lead to faster battery degradation.

Xiaomi’s 120W wired charging left us concerned about high charging temperatures in our testing. We found that it’s best for quick top-ups rather than a full charge. With 200W wired charging, excess heat generation could be an even bigger problem. However, we’ll only know when and if we get to see it in action.

Fitbit vs Apple Watch: Which fitness ecosystem is best?

If you’re looking for a fitness wearable, there is no shortage of devices to choose from. While this may be the case, two brands really stand out. Very often, it comes down to Fitbit vs. Apple Watch. And seeing as Fitbit is now owned by Google, this once again comes down to the same debate we’ve been having on mobile for years: Google or Apple?

Things are a little more complicated here, though. While both brands offer great products, the experience is very different depending on which option you choose. In fact, they are almost so different as to be incomparable. But compare them we shall!

Fitbit vs. Apple Watch: Fundamental differences

Fitbit Versa 3 Review Main Display on Wrist apple watch series 6 review always on display 2

As I just alluded to, Apple and Fitbit take a fundamentally different approach to wearables.

Fitbit devices are designed for fitness first and foremost, hence the name. While a few devices blur the line between smartwatch and fitness tracker, the focus is squarely on monitoring activity and counting calories.

Conversely, the Apple Watch is a smartwatch that can also be used for fitness. This is an important distinction. With that said, however, the sheer perfectionism of Apple and the huge ecosystem of third-party apps ensures the Apple Watch can offer one of the most robust fitness platforms available.

Again, we run into the issue of comparing apples and oranges (there’s a pun in there). Neither platform is better for fitness aficionados; rather, each has particular pros and cons. That’s what we’ll be exploring here in this Fitbit vs. Apple Watch showdown.

Fitness tracking with Fitbit

Fitbit has been in the fitness wearables game for the longest time, and it shows in the comprehensive range of features and extremely robust data tracking.

A typical Fitbit offers the following:

  • Tracks steps taken, calories burned, and floors climbed via barometric altimeter
  • Tracks distance traveled and pace via standalone GPS or connected GPS
  • Tracks Active Zone Minutes
  • Records heart rate on-demand, throughout the day, and during workouts
  • Offers automatic activity detection
  • Sleep tracking with details on sleep stages, restoration, total time asleep, nighttime disturbances, and trends
  • SpO2 monitoring

Additional features found on higher-end variants, such as the Fitbit Sense, include:

  • Electrodermal activity monitoring (stress)
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Skin temperature

All these sensors are top of their class. Fitbit generally has some of the most accurate heart rate sensors on the market.

It’s how Fitbit uses the data it collects that is impressive, though. In particular, the activity auto-detection is hands-down the best I’ve used. Fitbit devices will accurately detect my walks, runs, bike rides, and even the occasional weight lifting sessions. The same is true for sleep detection, which is extremely reliable, in my experience. Here is an area where Fitbit wins in any Fitbit vs. Apple Watch face-off.

Fitbit's activity auto-detection is hands-down the best I’ve used.

There’s a lot more to explore with Fitbit, too. Fitbit boasts extensive social features (great if you want a spot of encouragement) and integration with many useful services (Apple Health, Google Fit, MyFitnessPal, RunKeeper, Strava, etc.).

On top of that, Fitbit OS supports a growing ecosystem of third-party apps. If you’re looking for a feature that isn’t included by default, there’s a chance you’ll find it here alongside a slew of fun and useful distractions.

The app itself is also among the best, being clear to navigate while providing a lot of information.

If you want more, you can opt to plumb for Fitbit Premium. Fitbit Premium is a paid service that provides more insight into your health data via a “health metrics” dashboard, alongside guided workouts/workout videos and personalized insights.

See also: Fitbit Premium review: Is it worth it?

I find this irksome. While it’s perfectly understandable that Fitbit might want to offer additional services for a fee, the way it is done here feels cheap. Being told that additional sleep data is being kept behind a paywall is frustrating when you already paid for the device you’re holding. It would cost nothing more for Fitbit to show you that information, but you need to pay monthly to get the full benefit from your $100+ device.

And while I wouldn’t mind paying for guided workouts, being shown them constantly via the “Discover” tab makes it abundantly clear that you are getting a sub-par experience.

Fitbit and Apple both have premium options, but they're handled much differently.

When comparing Fitbit vs. Apple Watch, it’s only fair to point out that Apple also has a paid offering in Apple Fitness Plus. However, this is handled quite differently, as we will see in a moment.

Fitness tracking with the Apple Watch

Apple Watches come with a wide range of sensors to help you track health and fitness. The latest model is the Apple Watch Series 6, which offers the following:

  • Tracks steps taken, calories burned, and floors climbed via barometric altimeter
  • Tracks distance traveled and pace via standalone GPS or connected GPS
  • Records heart rate on-demand, throughout the day, and during workouts
  • Offers automatic activity detection
  • Sleep tracking with details on total time asleep, nighttime disturbances, and trends
  • SpO2 monitoring
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)

You’ll notice there is no skin temperature sensor or electrodermal activity monitoring here. In Apple’s defense, the usefulness of both these tools is debatable.

The other sensors are, once again, top class. In fact, in his Apple Watch Series 6 review, Jimmy called the Apple Watch Series 6 heart rate sensor “one of the best [he] ever used.” I often use the Apple Watch as the yardstick against which to compare other devices for review.

Like Fitbit, Apple also offers social features such as competitions with friends and is just as compatible with third-party services. If a fitness app is compatible with any smartwatch, it’s likely to be the Apple Watch.

With that said, the actual fitness ecosystem appears surprisingly bare-bones at first glance. The Fitness app displays four rings for movement, exercise, and standing-time… and not much else. You can dig deeper to get more information, but it’s not presented front and center. This is largely found in a second app, Apple Health, which collates the data pulled from other devices and apps you might be using.

See also: Your complete guide to Apple Health, Apple Fitness, and Apple Fitness Plus

Sleep tracking is also bare bones here. You get your time spent asleep but don’t get the detailed breakdown of sleep stages (again, this data should be taken with a pinch of salt). Until very recently, the Apple Watch didn’t offer any sleep tracking at all! And unfortunately, despite the onboard SpO2 sensor, the Apple Watch won’t alert you to potential issues like sleep apnea.

Apple Watch vs Fitbit for sleep

There are caveats to these issues that we will get to in a moment. But also lacking, in my experience, is activity auto-detection. While this is a feature of the Apple Watch, in theory, I find it to be very fickle on my Apple Watch Series 5. I can go on a 10-mile hike, and there is about a 40% chance I’ll see the prompt to record the walk. Even impromptu runs get missed, and you can forget bike rides. While you may have a different experience to report, this is a win for Fitbit in my book.

Sleep tracking is very bare-bones on the Apple Watch.

But Apple begins to pull ahead in the Fitbit vs. Apple Watch race once you start looking deeper.

That Health app, for example, actually hides all sorts of interesting data and insights you might otherwise miss. You can get notifications of irregular heart rhythms, you can set up a medical ID, and you can even set an automatic timer to make sure you are washing your hands for 20 minutes. You’ll also see data coming from all kinds of sources, including the iPhone itself. You’ve got walking speed, VO2 max, headphone audio levels, heart rate variability, even walking asymmetry.

Apple Watch App Store vs Fitbit

Things get even better once you start adding additional apps. While Fitbit OS has an increasingly varied selection of apps, it simply can’t keep up with the options on iOS. Whether you’re looking for an app to play music based on your heart rate (Endel), brain training on your wrist (Peak), interval timers, or anything else, you’ll find it here. You can even choose entirely different sleep trackers with far more detailed breakdowns of information.

This is where the Apple Watch begins to pull ahead of other options and becomes, in my opinion, the most flexible fitness ecosystem on the market.

Like Fitbit, Apple also has a paid service that can be used in addition to the core experience: Apple Fitness Plus. Unlike Fitbit, however, this service isn’t constantly front and center. While there is a tab in the Fitness app devoted to it (one of only two tabs, in fact), it is clearly marked as a separate service.

Moreover, Fitness Plus is squarely focused on guided workouts and videos. There is no gated data from your watch, and you at no point feel like your device’s wings have been clipped without it.

Fitbit vs. Apple Watch: Design and hardware

Fitbit vs Apple Watch design

The Apple Watch is a beacon of smartwatch design and is widely praised for its premium feel and great looks. There are a variety of materials offered each generation, with some being more luxury-oriented than others. But even the basic aluminum models feature stunning curved, AMOLED displays, minimal bezels, amazing haptics, and an all-around polished finish. A stand-out feature is the “digital crown” that mimics the appearance of an analog watch while offering a tactile and convenient form of navigation in addition to the touchscreen.

The Apple Watch is a beacon of smartwatch design.

When Fitbit is trying, it is capable of some great aesthetics, too. Although you could certainly also say its smartest devices are somewhat derivative. At a glance, you could easily mistake the Versa 3 or Sense for an Apple Watch. They feature the same square display, the same rounded corners, and a similarly large screen. The Sense and Versa 3 are the most well-designed Fitbit devices ever launched.

Fitbit Sense vs Apple Watch

But Fitbit can’t quite keep up with Apple’s production values, however. Nice though the Versas are, the screens feature subtle bezels and are actually a lot smaller than they appear. The materials generally feel lighter and less expensive, too. That’s fair, though, given that the Fitbit Versa 3 is cheaper ($230 vs. $380 for a standard Apple Watch Series 6), as is their most high-end offering, the Fitbit Sense.

There is also only one Apple Watch design (which has barely changed since the very first iteration). If you were looking for something more subtle — that could be worn in addition to a regular watch, for example — you will be disappointed. Fitbit, on the other hand, offers a wide range of different models to suit any need. The Fitbit Charge 4 and Inspire 2 are far more svelte options that are also very lightweight for sleeping and traveling. They also come in much, much cheaper than any Apple Watch at just $130 and $70, respectively.

fitbit charge 4 review watch face on wrist 1

So far, the Apple Watch is just about pulling ahead of the Fitbit in most areas. Apple’s biggest Achilles’ heel, though, is battery life. As it always has been.

A Fitbit smartwatch will typically last around 5-6 days, though this will be shorter if you use the always-on-display or go for multiple runs. Either way, it never gets as low as the Apple Watch’s roughly 36 hours. While the Apple Watch will almost always get you through a day, the issue is sleep tracking. If you choose to use Apple Sleep or one of the third-party offerings, you will need to charge the watch every day for 90 minutes. That’s 90 minutes of missed data and possibly much more should you forget.

Battery life drains more rapidly when you use the GPS, too. This means that you won’t want to use the Apple Watch for anything longer than a 10k.

Also read: Fitbit vs. Garmin: Which is right for you?

That said, neither an Apple Watch nor Fitbit would be my top pick for runners. There are a variety of great running watches if you need a long-lasting, accurate device — many of which are made by Garmin.

Fitbit vs. Apple Watch: Smartwatch features

Apple Watch vs Fitbit smartwatch features

Credit: Jimmy Westenberg / Android Authority

If you’re reading a comparison of Apple Watch vs. Fitbit, chances are you’re primarily looking for a fitness device. If you’re looking for a smartwatch, the answer is far more straightforward: Apple Watch is hands-down the better choice.

The Apple Watch has a much wider range of productivity apps available in the app store, it has cool features like widgets (complications), and it integrates with an iPhone in a myriad of smart ways. Everything has Apple’s unique touch, too. Even the torch is thoughtfully designed; it doesn’t become fully bright until you point it away from yourself and can be turned off by covering the screen with your palm.

And again, the huge ecosystem of third-party apps also makes a big difference. I’ve used my Apple Watch for everything from learning with cue cards to prompting myself during speeches.

Related: The best smartwatch deals we could find

And while Siri is generally considered one of the poorer voice assistants, it actually works really well on Apple Watch. If you’re using it to set timers and make calls, you’ll find it’s extremely useful to have on your wrist. Even if you only use the preloaded Apple Watch apps, you’ll have access to a variety of handy features: maps, a remote camera controller, news, weather, a walkie-talkie, a radio, podcasts, and more.

I genuinely miss my Apple Watch when I’m not wearing it, which I can’t say for any other device I’ve worn on my wrist.

None of which is to say that Fitbit devices can’t be good smartwatches. There is a slew of useful features on the Versa line, and these devices have great touch-responsiveness and snappy processors (starting with the second generation).

In particular, the inclusion of both Alexa and Google Assistant on the Versa 3 and Sense is a welcome addition. Having the choice of two different assistants gives Fitbit the edge here, especially as they are generally considered to be superior options.

Fitbit devices also benefit from a host of third-party apps, although you’re less likely to find exactly what you’re looking for (and it probably won’t be as well-made). The selection of pre-loaded apps is much narrower, too.

Of course, the big catch is that you will need an iPhone to use an Apple Watch in the first place. But then, if you only have an Android phone — what are you doing reading this? In terms of support, both platforms see regular updates which are pushed through reliably.

Fitbit vs. Apple Watch: Final thoughts

Fitbit Sense vs Apple Watch Series 6 watch faces displays 2

As you can see, there is no single best choice when comparing Fitbit vs. Apple Watch fitness ecosystems. Personally, I prefer Apple’s offering on the whole. Fitness tracking on an Apple Watch has the potential to be more comprehensive, thanks to the unrivaled app store. Apple Health also does an amazing job bringing a wide range of features together in a single spot. The latest Apple Watches have among the best wrist-based heart rate trackers on the market, and the hardware and software are up to Apple’s usual incredibly high standards. The Apple Watch is a computer on your wrist with a slew of powerful sensors. If you put the work in, the possibilities are nearly endless.

But Fitbit devices are arguably more focused on fitness. This is apparent in the superior sleep tracking, far better activity detection, and longer battery life. They give you more options in terms of hardware, too.
