The Flight Attendant season 2: Everything we know about the HBO Max series

The Flight Attendant HBO Max Main
Credit: WarnerMedia

The Flight Attendant, one of HBO Max‘s first original series after the WarnerMedia streamer launched in May 2020, became a huge, buzz-worthy hit, and a welcome distraction in the early, uncertain days of COVID-19.

Kaley Cuoco, best known for roles in 8 Simple Rules and The Big Bang Theory, shone brightly as the star of this sleeper hit about a flight attendant pulled into a dark world of murder and espionage after a bender overseas. Cuoco nabbed well-deserved Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her inspired performance.

Equal parts Alfred Hitchcock and workplace comedy, The Flight Attendant was a 2020 standout.

The first season of The Flight Attendant premiered November 26, 2020, on HBO Max. It was HBO Max’s number one series overall during its run. The show was a huge hit with critics too, and it earned several award nominations.

With season 1 well behind us, what’s next? Read on for everything we know about The Flight Attendant season 2.

HBO Max is your home for Warner Bros-made movies and TV shows like The Lord of the Rings, the DC Comics superheroes and more. It's also the home for new and original movies and shows available nowhere else.

What happened in season 1 of The Flight Attendant?

Season 1 of The Flight Attendant follows Cassie Bowden, the titular flight attendant who quickly gets embroiled in a deadly conspiracy involving one of the travellers on her flight to Bangkok.

Cassie wakes up after a characteristically boozey one-night-stand with the handsome, fabulously wealthy Alex Sokolov. But there’s a problem. Her bedmate is dead, seemingly murdered while she slept beside him.

The Flight Attendant is a dark, witty, and fun modern-day send-up of Hitchcock classics like The 39 Steps and North By Northwest.

Afraid of taking the blame (or that maybe she did it before blacking out drunk), Cassie returns home to New York, where she juggles FBI agents, assassins, suspicious friends, rich people behaving badly, a thorny family history, and Alex’s ghost.

Cassie has to fight for her life and to find out what happened in Bangkok in this dark, witty, and fun modern-day send-up of Hitchcock classics like The 39 Steps and North By Northwest.

When does The Flight Attendant season 2 come out?

Credit: WarnerMedia

HBO Max announced a second season of The Flight Attendant December 18, 2020, just one day after the first season finale.

The new season comes as something of a surprise, as season 1 was billed as a limited series. The Flight Attendant joins shows like HBO’s Big Little Lies and The Great which earned second seasons despite being launched as mini or limited series.

So far, very little is known about when production is set to start on The Flight Attendant season 2. HBO Max stated that the new season will bow in spring 2022. No firm premiere date has been revealed.

“To say that I am elated would be an understatement! The positive response to our show has surpassed all of our expectations and I’m so proud of the entire team behind its success,” said star and executive producer Cuoco. “We are committed to delivering diverse and quality entertainment, including an exciting (and probably a little crazy) TFA season 2!!”

Is it still based on the same book?

The Flight Attendant season 2 HBO Max book

Credit: WarnerMedia

Season 1 of The Flight Attendant is based on the novel of the same name by Chris Bohjalian.

It’s safe to say season 2 will move away from the novel’s inspiration since the whole thing was adapted in the first outing.

Setting aside plot differences between the book and series, The Flight Attendant novel has no sequels as of yet. Its story is complete, and it already played out onscreen.

That means the show’s writers will have to come up with a new storyline. It’s still based on the novel, in that the characters are borrowed from Bohjalian, but anyone who’s done the reading ahead of time will go in just as unspoiled as the rest of us.

Who’s involved in The Flight Attendant season 2?

The Flight Attendant season 2 HBO Max

Credit: WarnerMedia

Kaley Cuoco is back as Cassie in The Flight Attendant season 2. But beyond that, the show could go in just about any direction, adding new characters and maybe leaving some behind.

Depending on who’s asked back and how negotiations go, safe money is on the return of Cassie’s friends and colleagues, as well as her brother. We may see more of Rosie Perez, Zosia Mamet, Michelle Gomez, T.R. Knight, and Griffin Matthews, among other season 1 cast members.

And maybe Cassie’s not quite finished with her visions of Alex, who was played by Michiel Huisman in season 1.

Behind the camera, the first season was produced by Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions and Yes, Norman Productions. Greg Berlanti, Kaley Cuoco, Steve Yockey, and Sarah Schechter served as executive producers. Suzanne McCormack co-executive produced.

What can we expect from season 2?

The Flight Attendant

Credit: WarnerMedia

HBO Max has not shared a lot of information about season 2 of The Flight Attendant yet. Still, we can piece together a few details from the information we do have.

“Season 2 will feature Cassie in a new adventure,” HBO Max said in a statement soon after announcing the second season. But the streamer has been pretty mum about any other details.

Cuoco has told Deadline that season 2 will likely focus on Cassie’s “sober journey” following the booze-heavy first season. “I think she’s going to learn very quickly that this is a life-long struggle and she’s going to be way over her head.”

“The CIA is definitely interested in her,” she added. That means the espionage and intrigue of season 1 should still be a big part of season 2. And presumably the Hitchcock influence will be too. Before the renewal, showrunner Steve Yockey told The New York Times that, “If we did have a second season, it probably would be a whole new adventure, like a new Hitchcock movie for Cassie to stumble into.”

Sounds like fun!

That’s everything we know about The Flight Attendant season 2, heading to HBO Max in spring 2022. We’ll be sure to update you as soon as we learn more.

Are iPhone buyers more loyal than Android buyers?

Opinion post by
Eric Zeman

The US smartphone market has reached a sort of balance in the last couple of years. As many people in the US now buy devices running Apple’s iOS as they do buy devices running Google’s Android, giving each platform roughly 50% of the market. It didn’t use to be that way, however; the balance has tipped in favor of iOS recently, allowing it to steal ground from Android.

What’s behind the slow erosion of Android’s market share in the US? Loyalty, according to new data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.

Small numbers make a big difference

As recently as 2017, Android held about two-thirds of the US market for smartphones, says CIRP’s research, leaving iOS with about one-third of the market. At that time, the Android platform enjoyed a loyalty rating of about 91% while iOS’s loyalty rating was about 86%. That means 91 out of 100 Android device owners remained with the platform when upgrading their phones. Over the last four years, loyalty to the Android platform has shifted very little in the US. Loyalty to iOS, in the meantime, has slowly ticked upward.

“Loyalty and switching help explain some of the change in share of new phone activations, with iOS gaining loyalty in a market with minimal switching,” said Mike Levin, CIRP Partner and co-founder. “In the most recent quarter, Apple had an edge in loyalty, with 93% of prior iPhone owners upgrading to a new iPhone, compared to 88% of Android owners staying with Android. Over several years, iOS gained about five percentage points in loyalty, while Android remained flat. This allowed Apple to steadily increase the iOS share of new smartphone activations.”

Android folks' loyalty has remained mostly unchanged.

In other words, Android folks’ loyalty has remained mostly unchanged, while iOS users’ loyalty has gone up. Despite the small shift in numbers, the inevitable was bound to happen — a 50/50 market split in the US.

CIRP developed these numbers by surveying 500 people who activated a new phone in the April to June 2021 timeframe. That sample is perhaps a little on the small side, but CIRP’s overall market share findings line up with other research firms. For example, Counterpoint’s data shows iOS’ share of the US market is about 50% over the last year, though it has swung rather wildly from quarter to quarter.

Brands tell a different story

Where CIRP’s data shows us loyalty to Android, in general, has remained mostly unchanged, SellCell’s data says otherwise. SellCell recently polled some 5,000 US residents about their mobile devices and made some interesting findings regarding individual brands.

To start, brand loyalty to Apple is super high at 92%, an improvement of 1.5 percentage points from where Apple brand loyalty was two years ago. This lines up with CIRP’s data. During the same two-year period, however, Samsung saw its brand loyalty drop from 85.7% to 74%. That means more than one in four Samsung users said they planned to buy a different brand of device the next time they upgraded. Most tellingly, 53% of Samsung defectors said they’d switch to an iPhone.

Other Android brands lost loyalty as well. Loyalty to the Google Pixel fell off a cliff, dropping from 84% in 2019 to 65.2% in 2021. Motorola and LG fared much worse, with 71% and 62.6% of owners saying they plan to switch brands come time to upgrade.

Unfortunately, the data from CIRP and SellCell is limited to US consumers; they didn’t poll people outside the US.

Why have loyalties changed?

OnePlus 9 Pro vs iPhone 12 Pro Max on couch arm

Credit: Luke Pollack / Android Authority

The most interesting question here isn’t which brand or platform maintained the most loyalty, rather it’s why loyalties have changed at all.

One reason? Privacy. SellCell found that 31.5% of respondents planned to switch from Samsung to an iPhone due to privacy concerns. Apple has ramped up the privacy rhetoric in recent years, to be sure. Another 25.2% of defectors said they’d leave Samsung due to better value for money offered by other brands.

Not all iPhone owners are happy and some do in fact switch to other brands. Some 38% of iPhone owners cited other brands’ better technology as reasons for switching away, with 26.4% preferring other brands’ design language, and 12.9% opting for newer features on the latest Android devices.

But the biggest reason people stick with their smartphone brand? Ecosystem lock-in and fear of change.

Apple may have enjoyed an uptick in loyalty in the US in recent years, but that hasn’t helped its global picture. Apple’s iOS held onto 15% to 17% of the worldwide market for smartphones during the first quarter of 2021, depending on which analyst firm’s numbers you choose to believe. With an approximate market share of 85%, Android clearly dominates compared to iOS on a global scale, and it’s obvious Android users are a loyal bunch over time.

OnePlus Nord 2 vs older OnePlus phones: Should you upgrade?

OnePlus Nord 2 with OnePlus Nord and OnePlus 9
Credit: Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority

With OnePlus’ flagships getting more expensive, the company introduced its Nord series in 2020 to provide a mid-range, and more importantly, more affordable alternative to its high-end devices. The original Nord was a success, but just a year later, its successor — the OnePlus Nord 2 — is facing an extremely saturated mid-range market with phones offering a lot of bang for your buck.

The Nord 2 seems to tick all the right boxes. It mimics a flagship design, features high-end performance, and offers almost everything that OnePlus fans love. However, is the OnePlus Nord 2 a worthy upgrade compared to OnePlus’ older devices? We look at how the Nord 2 stacks up against all the OnePlus smartphones that came before it to see if it’s time for you to upgrade.

Our verdict: OnePlus Nord 2 review

OnePlus Nord 2 vs OnePlus 6, 6T, and older

OnePlus 6 and 6T from the back

Oneplus 6t and 6

The OnePlus 6 and 6T were the last of the company’s “flagship killer” era. The OnePlus 6T, in particular, was an extremely popular device, offering the right mix of high-end specs and features with a price tag that was hard to beat. Despite how much the smartphone landscape has changed in the last few years, the OnePlus 6 and 6T don’t feel old, with these devices setting design and feature trends that continue to this day.

The OnePlus 6 was the first from the company to feature a notch to house the front-facing camera, and with the 6T came the waterdrop notch and an under-display fingerprint scanner. The curved glass back and near bezel-less front hold up as well. The Snapdragon 845 processor backed by 8GB of RAM is still a capable processing package. While the camera was never OnePlus’ strong suit, the dual-camera setup is more than serviceable.

OnePlus history: The company’s entire lineup so far

That said, there’s plenty that shows the age of these phones. The display’s 60Hz refresh rate is distinctly old school compared to current alternatives. And the 20W charging, while “Warp Charge” at the time, feels quite slow now when pitted against the 65W fast charging of devices like the Nord 2. Of course, you won’t get 5G support either, but that’s not really a big deal unless you live in an area with a strong 5G signal. OnePlus also delayed its Oxygen OS 11 rollout, with the phones expected to receive the software update later this year. Unfortunately, that is also the end of the road for these devices, with neither expected to get Android 12.

There are plenty of reasons why the OnePlus Nord 2 is worth buying if you’re still rocking the OnePlus 6 or 6T. You get a faster processor, a better display with a higher refresh rate, better cameras, and faster charging. Anyone looking to upgrade to the Nord 2 won’t face the jarring price hike they would if buying OnePlus’ latest flagships either.

OnePlus Nord 2 vs OnePlus 7 series

OnePlus 7T Pro rear in hand taking photo

OnePlus started its Pro iterations with the OnePlus 7 and 7T series, which started its push into true flagship territory in terms of both features and price. There was a clear distinction between the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro, with the latter coming with a triple rear camera setup, faster charging, a QHD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate (compared to the FHD+ 60Hz screen of the regular version), and an all-screen front with a pop-up camera.

Things got a lot more muddled with the 7T series. The 7T Pro was largely an iterative update, with the only difference being the upgrade to the Snapdragon 855 Plus processor. OnePlus also brought the best features of the Pro editions — except for the display resolution and the design — to the regular 7T.

OnePlus guide: Everything you need to know about the brand

Even though these phones are from 2019, they aren’t particularly far behind the Nord 2. The Snapdragon 855 and 855 Plus still hold up really well, you get 8GB of RAM, and these phones will likely get an upgrade to Android 12. The 7 Pro, 7T, and 7T Pro all come with 90Hz display refresh rates, and the Pro editions feature a higher resolution than the Nord 2. You also get triple-camera setups across the board, and the Nord 2 doesn’t come with an IP rating or wireless charging either.

The Nord 2 has a few advantages, of course, courtesy of being a newer release. It’s a better performer, you get much faster charging, and the cameras are better, even though real-world performance isn’t up to the mark just yet. The Nord 2 will also get software updates faster. If you already have the 7T or the Pro editions and are considering an upgrade, you might be better off with the OnePlus flagships unless you’re looking for an affordable option.

OnePlus Nord 2 vs OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, and 8T

Credit: Ryan-Thomas Shaw / Android Authority

If you have the OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, or the 8T, you probably aren’t looking to upgrade anyway, and if you are, the Nord 2 isn’t the device you should be considering. The Nord 2 is a mid-ranger through and through, and while the 8 series might be a year older at this point, its flagship chops continue to shine through.

The OnePlus 8 Pro is understandably the better of the two 8 series models. You get a QHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate, compared to the FHD+ 90Hz screen of the regular model, and wireless charging. The Pro also comes with an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, and a much better camera setup. The 8T also brings the best features of the 8 Pro to a more affordable package, with a higher display refresh rate and faster wired charging. However, you miss out on the QHD+ screen, an IP rating, and wireless charging compared to the 8 Pro.

OnePlus 8 buyer’s guide: Everything you need to know

The Nord 2 offers similar performance and charges faster than the 8 and 8 Pro. However, it’s behind when considering everything else, and there’s certainly nothing here to justify an upgrade from the three 2020 releases.

OnePlus Nord 2 vs OnePlus Nord

OnePlus Nord 2 placed next to OnePlus Nord

Credit: Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority

The OnePlus Nord 2 is a decent upgrade over its predecessor. Its Dimensity 1200 processor offers better performance, the camera setup is arguably an improvement, and not only is the Nord 2’s battery bigger but it can be charged much faster too. The Nord 2 also borrows design elements from the OnePlus 9 series and looks and feels more premium. That’s where the differences end though.

Both phones come with similar displays and identical RAM and storage configurations. The older Nord has more cameras as well, with a quad-camera setup on the back and dual front-facing shooters, compared to the triple camera package and single front-facing unit of the Nord 2. However, the number of cameras is no indication of quality, and the Nord 2 will likely be the better of the two after OnePlus sorts out some launch day issues with software updates.

OnePlus Nord buyer’s guide: Everything you need to know

This is the only match-up that really matters among OnePlus’ more recent releases. Even then, if you have the OnePlus Nord, it might be too soon to upgrade to its successor, and there isn’t enough here to make the jump just yet.

OnePlus Nord 2 vs OnePlus 9 series

OnePlus Nord 2 vs OnePlus 9 back side by side

Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority

This comparison is a no-brainer. The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro are the company’s latest flagships and are obviously better than the Nord 2. There’s absolutely no reason why you’d want to get the Nord 2 if you already have a 9 series phone.

The 9 and 9 Pro come with the Snapdragon 888 under the hood, a 120Hz display refresh rate, identical batteries, and the same wired charging speeds. For the first time, OnePlus also brings wireless charging to the non-Pro model, even though you get much faster 50W wireless charging with the 9 Pro. The 9 Pro also has a higher resolution display, an IP68 rating for water resistance, and a better camera package.

OnePlus 9 buyer’s guide: Everything you need to know

The Nord 2 actually doesn’t look that different from the regular OnePlus 9. It even keeps the primary cameras from its flagship sibling. However, that’s where OnePlus’ partnership with Hasselblad for its flagship series makes all the difference. The Nord 2’s camera capabilities aren’t anywhere near the 9 series, for now at least, despite similar hardware. And that’s disappointing because the camera is the only area in which the Nord 2 could potentially match the flagships.

The only reason you should consider the Nord 2 is if you haven’t bought a 9 series phone yet and if you’re looking to save a whole lot of money. At close to a thousand dollars, the Nord 2 is less than half the price of the 9 Pro and quite a bit cheaper than the regular 9. And that’s pretty much the only saving grace for the Nord 2 compared to the current OnePlus flagships.

Should you upgrade to the OnePlus Nord 2?

OnePlus Nord 2 top down view outside with foliage

Credit: Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority

The problem with a mid-ranger is that it’s difficult to justify an upgrade compared to what were all flagships at the time. The Nord 2 is definitely an improvement over the 6, 6T, or older phones and is the only upgrade I can safely say yes to. It has its advantages over the 7 and 7T series, but unless you’re looking for a more affordable option, the Nord 2 isn’t the “upgrade” you’re looking for.

If you're rocking a OnePlus 6T or older, the Nord 2 would make for a fine upgrade.

Things are similarly unclear with the older Nord. The Nord 2 is the better phone, but the Nord isn’t old by any means, and it might be too soon for an upgrade. Finally, there’s absolutely no reason why you’d want to switch to the Nord 2 if you already have the OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, 8T, or either of the two 9 series smartphones.

OnePlus Nord 2
The OnePlus Nord 2 follows up the company's mid-range debut from 2020. The phone builds on last year's formula with a new design, faster processor, and the 50MP camera sensor from the higher-end OnePlus 9 series.

Will you be upgrading from an older OnePlus smartphone to the OnePlus Nord 2? Let us know in the comments!

The Galaxy S21 is one of the best phones around right now and we ranked the S21 series as the best Samsung smartphone too. This flagship device is great for the everyday user and packs enough punch to handle nearly anything you’ll want to throw at it. Right now, you can trade in your old phone and get the Samsung Galaxy S21 for free.

The best part of this deal is that, unlike some carriers, the full $800 discount on the S21 range is available for trading in a wide variety of phones — not just upgrading a six-month-old model. For instance, switching up your old Samsung Galaxy S9 unlocks the full value.

Next up: Should you upgrade from the S20 to the S21?

The Galaxy S21 blends premium and practical in a way that most users will likely enjoy. The device has a great design, a three-camera system on the back, the Snapdragon 888 processor, and a 6.2-inch dynamic AMOLED display. While the battery life may leave a little to be desired, the S21 is absolutely capable of standing shoulder to shoulder with the best flagship phones on the market like the Google Pixel 5 and iPhone 12.

Save $700 on the iPhone 12 series with most trade-ins

If you’ve been looking for a good opportunity to upgrade to the latest iPhone then this might be your opportunity. Even if you trade in something as old as the iPhone 8 you can still get $700 off any of the iPhone 12 series when you also include an unlimited line.

By way of example, this allows you to get the 64GB model of the standard iPhone 12 for a total payment of just $100 ($700 off), or the highest storage model of the iPhone 12 Pro Max for as little as $19 per month ($19 off). Also included in the deal are the iPhone 12 Pro and the Microsoft Surface Duo. The latter is free with a trade-in.

Considering the iPhone 12 series is still less than a year old, being able to grab it for $700 off using a trade-in is pretty sweet. With a different design and a MagSafe magnetic charging ring, the iPhone 12 series is a noticeable step up from older models.

Save big on smartphones without a trade-in

So far we’ve outlined how you can get a top Samsung or Apple flagship with a trade-in, but not everyone owns a device ready to swap. AT&T acknowledges this and offers a range of discounts on other great smartphones without requiring a switch-up. If you’ll commit to an unlimited line then you can get a cut-price on your new handset.

The phones you can save on are mainly from the same two rival brands, but they include the likes of the popular Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and the impressive iPhone SE. The iPhone SE offers the A13 Bionic chip and up to 256GB of storage, but it will cost you only $5 per month if you commit to a new line.

Here’s a rundown of the savings that you can make:

There are AT&T deals available on hotspots, too. Right now, you can pop the Unite Express 2 into your pocket for just the cost of your data plan. It’s not a 5G-ready hotspot, but the retail price is normally $145, so this could be a great way to get yourself connected while you wait for a faster connection to come along.
