The cheapest countries to buy an iPad Pro

Apple iPad Pro M2 2022 rear 3
Credit: Oliver Cragg / Android Authority

The iPad Pro is one of the most powerful tablets on the market — and one of the most expensive. Apple ensures you pay a premium for its brand, and the manufacturer isn’t known for offering big discounts on its tech either. Maybe someone in the gym or around the water cooler told you that you’d be able to pick up much cheaper from another country, but is it true? We’ve dug into the prices and worked out which is the cheapest place to buy an iPad Pro.

There are a couple of clarifications to make before we get into the prices. First, we will focus on the prices of the base model 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models in this comparison. That means the 128GB Wi-Fi configurations. Unsurprisingly, the cheapest and most expensive places don’t change too much in ranking for the other variants.

Googles next-gen AR glasses join the Google graveyard

Google IO 2022 smart glasses
Credit: Google
  • Google has scrapped its plans for next-gen augmented reality glasses.
  • The company has decided to pivot to developing software platforms for AR instead.
  • Google employees were reportedly frustrated with leaders continually changing the strategy for the project.

Currently, there’s an augmented reality (AR) hardware arms race brewing between Samsung, Apple, and Meta. At one time, Google was also a part of that race, as it worked on a product called Project Iris. But it appears Google has now bowed out of that race after canceling the project.

Details about Project Iris first emerged in a report from The Verge in January 2022. The device was described as an AR device resembling a pair of ski goggles. However, that particular device happened to be a separate AR project in partnership with Samsung — which was announced earlier this year. The real Project Iris was instead a series of products resembling a pair of glasses.

Googles Nearby Share can now send files to your sleeping devices

  • Nearby Share, Android’s equivalent to AirDrop, continues to receive updates from Google.
  • The latest change lets you share files and text to your devices even when their screens are off.
  • Google hasn’t announced this change, but we recently noticed it on our devices.

A lot of people are still not aware that Android has an equivalent to AirDrop called Nearby Share, and that’s a shame because it only keeps getting better and better. Earlier this year, the sharing service added support for Windows, enabling you to share files between your Android device and your PC. Now, the service appears to have quietly rolled out a nifty quality-of-life improvement that’ll make sharing even more convenient between your devices: the ability to send things to your devices even when their screens are off.

When you previously opened Nearby Share on a sender device, only devices whose screens were on and unlocked could appear in the list of devices you could send to. This was done to save battery life, as devices have to periodically broadcast their availability over Bluetooth in order to appear as a receiver target in Nearby Share. That’s not a big deal when the screen is on and the phone is unlocked, as the battery drain from periodic Bluetooth scans is negligible compared to other battery guzzlers like the screen itself or the modem. However, when the screen is off, it’s generally best to throttle scans or services to maximize battery life, and that’s what Google did with Nearby Share for the longest time.

What is a 0.5 selfie and how can you create one?

Pixel 7 Pro selfie with rear camera through viewfinder edited
Credit: Hadlee Simons / Android Authority

Are you following the latest trends on social media? A new one has arrived. Maybe you’ve noticed some interesting selfies lately, showing odd proportions like long arms, more prominent foreheads, and what may seem like overall distorted perspectives. We’re here to tell you all about what is a 0.5 selfie and how to create your very own.

What is a 0.5 selfie?

A 0.5 selfie is pronounced as a “point five selfie” and is simply a photo shot with an ultrawide angle camera. Such ultrawide angle lenses have curved glass, allowing images to cover a wider visibility. As a result, the image will be morphed, extending and changing the look of how things look, especially closer to the edges. This is why 0.5 selfies usually show super long arms; these are commonly along the photo’s edges. This effect is similar to what a fisheye lens does, but undertoned.

NFC payments are about to become faster easier and truly contactless

  • The NFC Forum has laid down a roadmap that outlines five key initiatives through 2028.
  • The outline offers a glimpse at the future of NFC technology.
  • One of the initiatives is to increase the range of NFC connections by four to six times the current distance.

Have you ever noticed that contactless payments aren’t exactly contactless? Since near-field communication (NFC) technology works at such a short distance, you often end up having to touch your device with another device. But that status quo could change in the next few years.

The NFC Forum — a group founded by Sony, NXP Semiconductors, and Nokia in 2004 to improve NFC — has revealed a roadmap for NFC technology that extends from now to 2028. This roadmap — created by representatives from Apple, Google, and more — outlines five key initiatives for the direction of the technology over the next two to five years. One of those initiatives is to increase the range of NFC connections.

What is network latency and how important is it for enjoying online activities?

Google Nest Wi Fi Pro router front view on table
Credit: Kris Carlon / Android Authority

Recently I’ve been writing a lot about satellite internet providers and Starlink. This has inevitably brought up discussions about latency. Still, what is latency exactly, and why is it so important? In this short explainer, we dive into the answer. For clarity, latency can also be used to talk about the lag time between computer operations or even disk latency. In this article, we’re focusing specifically on network latency.

Latency vs Bandwidth vs Throughput

You’ve likely heard the terms latency, bandwidth, and throughput before. What do these things mean, and what’s the difference? Latency measures the time it takes for data to transfer from one point of a network to another. The lower the latency, the faster the server and your mobile device or computer communicate. Meanwhile, bandwidth is the amount of actual data that can go through the network at any time during these transfers.

  • Apple may have been working with Nike to create workouts.
  • Former employees say Apple may have hesitated to show off the Vision Pro’s fitness features because of the clunky external battery.

It may not seem like to those who haven’t tried, but VR can be a pretty good way to work out. However, when Apple showed off its Vision Pro headset at WWDC, fitness seemed to be missing from the list of potential uses of the device. A new report claims there may have been a reason why the feature didn’t appear at the show.

Although Apple did allow WWDC attendees to try out a meditation app on the Vision Pro, the company mostly avoided demonstrating the Vision Pro’s potential as a fitness device. This wasn’t because Apple thinks its device shouldn’t be used this way, but rather Apple may not have been ready to show off this capability.

Younger demographics, in particular, find the app irresistible, with those between 15-25 making up 48% of the app’s user base in the US and reaching 90% of the 13-24-year-old population in over 20 countries. So why are so many young people hooked on Snapchat? What is it doing right, and are there any rain clouds in what appears to be sunshine and rainbows? We’ll look at some of the pros and cons of Snapchat and a list of the best alternatives you should consider using instead.

What makes Snapchat so popular?

Maybe you’re not a fan of the Google Pixel 7a, but every phone usually comes with some pretty interesting wallpapers, and this budget phone from Google is no exception. The good news is you can download the Pixel 7a wallpapers and set them on any device.

If you like the feathery wallpapers that have been gracing Pixel devices since the Google Pixel 7, you’ll be glad to learn Google continues the trend with the Pixel 7a. These are slightly different, though, and there are some excellent additions that go in line with the new set of colors. These include the traditional Charcoal and Snow hues, as well as the more adventurous Sea and Coral.

Apple takes a page from Samsung patents Gear VR-like headset for the iPhone

  • Apple secured a patent for a new head-mounted display.
  • The patent describes a goggle-like accessory that encases an iPhone or iPad.
  • The device is reminiscent of Samsung’s retired Gear VR headset.

It appears Apple is going all in on mixed reality technology. In addition to the recently announced Vision Pro, it’s believed the Cupertino firm is working on a more affordable version of the device. But that may not be the only headset the company is working on, according to a new patent.

As discovered by ZDNET, Apple secured a new patent this week. The patent in question shows a head-mounted display (HMD) style accessory capable of housing an iPhone or iPad. Reportedly, the device would be able to operate like an iPhone or iPad-powered mixed-reality headset.

Garmin Epix Pro review: Should you buy it?

Garmin Epix Pro review: At a glance

  • What is it? The Epix Pro is the half-step successor of the Epix Gen 2. Not quite an Epix 3 but boasting major upgrades, the device is referred to as the Epix Pro, or the Epix Pro (Gen 2). A welcome update to one of Garmin’s top smartwatch families with AMOLED displays, the Epix Pro series brings three unique case sizes to the lineup. Each packs a powerful heart rate sensor, multiband GNSS, a built-in LED flashlight, and advanced training tools.
  • What is the price? Garmin Epix Pro models start at $899 for a 42mm or 44mm model and $999 for the largest 51mm option. Sapphire editions cost an additional $100 across the lineup.
  • Where can you buy it? The Garmin Epix Pro is available now from Garmin and Amazon.
  • How did we test it? I tested the 42mm Garmin Epix Pro (standard edition) for one week. The review unit was supplied by Garmin.
  • Is it worth it? There is a lot to like about the upgrades on what was already one of Garmin’s top watches. Anyone intimidated by the line’s historic 47mm profile can finally hit check out on an Epix Pro that’s built for smaller wrists. Likewise, anyone hankering for an oversized wearable can now snag a 51mm option. Across the series, all three models offer a beautiful display, virtually flawless GPS and heart rate tracking, and tons of useful training features. The Epix is pricey for sure, but the hardware is fantastic and the company’s commitment to supporting its devices makes the price tag an easier pill to swallow.

Should you buy the Garmin Epix Pro?

To the joy of petite and wide-wristed users everywhere, the Epix Pro is now available in three sizes: 42mm, 47mm, and 51mm. These are the same sizes found in the Garmin Fenix 7 Pro series which launched in tandem. As when Garmin added a second size to its Instinct 2 lineup, I gratefully tip my hat to the company for more inclusive offerings.

Dont judge all of Android by the worst of Android

Android Logo Stock Image Android Robot

Opinion post by
C. Scott Brown

This year hasn’t been great for Android so far. In two recent reports, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) showed that more people than ever are jumping ship from Android to iOS. The agency says that most of these folks — about 53% — leave because of “prior phone problems.” In other words, the users weren’t happy with their Android phone’s performance in some way and decided iOS would be a better fit.

In other regions of tech, this kind of conclusion can make sense. For example, a Garmin smartwatch will be vastly superior for hardcore runners than something like a Fitbit. However, a Fitbit would likely be better for someone who isn’t an athlete but wants to keep tabs on their overall health. Experiencing any device on either of these platforms and deciding you’d rather be in a different ecosystem does not mean the original platform sucks: it just means it isn’t a good fit for your needs.

We can’t talk about the best wireless earbuds or best headphones on the market today without mentioning Sony. The company has found a winning formula and churned one success after the other with its WH and WF series. Two things have stopped me from trying its products so far, though: I prefer over-ear headphones that wrap more tightly around the head and collapse into a more portable form factor, and I simply can’t use its earbuds because they’re too big. But the upcoming Sony WF-1000XM5 could change that thanks to their smaller form factor which promises better comfort.

The best video downloader extensions for Chrome

As much as video services would like to pretend we’re always online and perfectly happy with streaming, there are plenty of times when people want offline access — for a trip, say, or to ensure a favorite video doesn’t suddenly vanish. If you’ve got Google Chrome on your desktop or laptop, there are a number of video downloader extensions to choose from.

The best video downloader extensions for Chrome

We’re only going to recommend a small handful of options here, not the least because every extension is aiming towards an identical goal. Think of this list more as a set of backup choices — downloaders can easily come and go given their questionable legality. In fact, Google tries to outright block extensions from downloading from YouTube, though the reality is that it’s not hard to bypass those limits.

Steam Deck 2: Release date price rumors specs and what we want to see

After multiple stabs at the hardware market, Valve finally hit big with the Steam Deck — a handheld gaming console built to play PC games on the go. The black behemoth portable has silenced any naysayers, proving to be a hugely popular Nintendo Switch alternative that used a killer combo of Linux, SteamOS, and a Proton compatibility layer to run an ever-increasing number of the millions of games in the Steam library.

Such unprecedented success for a PC-centric handheld has unsurprisingly drawn the eyes of several competitors. Be it the Windows-powered ASUS ROG Ally, cloud gaming-focused systems like the Razer Edge, or maybe even the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2, the Steam Deck should remain a fan favorite, but some of its shortcomings will become a little harder to live with as its rivals start to up their game.

Sweeping new law will force replaceable batteries on smartphones

nokia g22 battery replacement 58
Credit: Scott Scrivens / Android Authority
  • European Parliament passed a change to a law that will force replaceable batteries on all gadgets, including smartphones.
  • By law, phones in the EU by 2027 will need to have batteries you can replace with no tools, which means no adhesives.
  • This could fundamentally change how smartphones are designed.

Way back in the day, most smartphones had batteries you could easily swap. You didn’t need tools or a heat gun, either: you could just pop off the back, take the battery out, put in a new one, and go on with your day. It was common to see people with a spare battery in their pockets. Nowadays, thanks to most smartphones being two chunks of glass glued to a metal frame, this is no longer possible.

However, European Parliament may have just brought those days back. In a sweeping new change to a previous law, MEPs voted 587 to nine to force all gadgets to have easily replaceable batteries. When we say “easily,” we mean it: MEPs say this should not require special tools, which means no adhesives.

  • Most of Samsung’s own apps are said to be optimized as well.

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 will see a number of improvements from its predecessor. Arguably, the biggest change of all will be the size of the cover display. Along with that new and improved cover display, Samsung is believed to be working on apps that are optimized for the screen’s size. A new report claims that Samsung and Google are working together to get this done.

From previous leaks, it has been reported that the Flip 5’s cover screen will go up from 1.9 inches to 3.4 inches. As a result, the display will take up the majority of the top half of the device. The increased size lends to more potential functionality for the cover screen than ever before.

  • A trusted journalist has confirmed that Apple is working on two more headsets.
  • One headset is a cheaper model that could launch at the end of 2025.
  • The other headset will be a follow-up to the newly launched Vision Pro.

Apple revealed its Vision Pro XR headset a week ago, packing loads of tech and a $3,500 price tag. This isn’t intended to be a one-off product, though, and a trusted journalist has shared more details.

Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman has previously claimed that Apple is working on a standard (i.e. non-Pro) Vision headset as a cheaper option. But Gurman has now asserted in his Power On newsletter that the company is actually working on two new models instead of one.
