Android owners can now transfer their eSIMs to any Android phone

  • Google appears to have quietly launched its eSIM transfer tool which was announced at MWC 2023.
  • Users are discovering that they can now swap their eSIM from one Android phone to any other Android phone.
  • It appears the functionality is limited to T-Mobile eSIM profiles.

Every day, we move that much closer to the day when eSIMs completely replace physical SIM cards. In preparation for that future, Google appears to have quietly launched its eSIM transfer tool for Android.

According to Android Police, one of its readers who was setting up a Galaxy S24 Ultra noticed they were given the option to transfer their eSIM from their LG V60 ThinQ by scanning a QR code. The outlet was also able to get the pop-up to appear on the Pixel 8 Pro from the Galaxy S24 Ultra and vice versa.

Firefox may get tablet UI after all

  • Mozilla is reportedly working on tablet UI for Firefox.
  • Mozilla’s response to a user review suggested that the Firefox team was not currently working on tablet UI.
  • Tablet UI is not a high priority for the company, but it does have a prototype that’s available.

Last week, multiple outlets — including our own — reported that tablet UI won’t be coming to Firefox anytime soon. While tablet UI is still likely a ways away for the browser, it appears Mozilla has at least been working on it.

Before we go any further, let’s first explain the confusion surrounding the issue. Earlier this month, a Mozilla representative responded to a Google Play Store user review that complained about a lack of tablet UI. The company replied by stating the following:

Here’s how the Pixel 8 Pro’s thermometer measures body temperature

google pixel 8 pro temperature sensor
Credit: Ryan Haines / Android Authority
  • Google recently received FDA approval for its body temperature feature.
  • The Pixel 8 Pro’s thermometer works by measuring the infrared radiation your body emits and then puts the results through an algorithm to calculate body temperature.
  • Google says the app’s body temperature measurements come within ±0.3 degrees C when compared to FDA-cleared temporal artery thermometers.

Google is in the process of rolling out January 2024’s Pixel Feature Drop, which includes a body temperature measuring feature for the Pixel 8 Pro. Google has now explained in detail how the feature works and how the company received FDA approval.

In the Pixel 8 Pro, there is an infrared sensor that owners can use as a thermometer. This sensor sits next to the rear camera and works together with Google’s Thermometer app. While the sensor was previously only approved for measuring the temperatures of objects, it can now also measure body temperature.

Please buy the Galaxy S24 Plus instead of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Here’s why!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHJmuE4o9_A

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is, objectively, the best phone in the Galaxy S24 series. One only needs to look at the hardware, design, S Pen, and camera system to support the claim. However, not everyone needs the power the Ultra offers, just like one doesn’t need an RTX 4090 to play Minecraft or take a Ferrari on a grocery run.

  • The Google Pixel 9 Pro has leaked nine months before its expected launch.
  • The phone appears to have a new design with flat sides and an alleged 6.5-inch display.
  • We expect to see this launch in October 2024.

Today, we have what appears to be our first look at the upcoming Google Pixel 9 Pro. Thanks to trusted leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer, aka OnLeaks, we can see the Pixel 9 Pro from all sides in the renders above and below (via MySmartPrice).

The fact that we have leaked renders today is astounding, considering this phone isn’t likely to launch until October, which is over nine months away. Google is notorious for having a leaky ship, but a leak as early as this one is pretty remarkable.

Rita El Khoury

Ever since Google announced it was removing over 20 features from Google Assistant last week, I’ve been trying to get to grips with why I’m so disappointed by this move. It’s not that any of the features were essential; I wasn’t using any of them in any substantial way, to be frank. No, it’s the announcement itself and what it means in the grand scheme of the Google Assistant story arc.

And what it means can be summed in one word: Chaos.

Microsoft is working on a YouTube-like video copyright identifying app

  • Microsoft has filed a patent for a tool that can identify copyrighted video content.
  • The tool may be a standalone app or a plugin for some other product like Microsoft Copilot.
  • The tool is said to work similarly to YouTube’s Copyright Match Tool.

Microsoft appears to be working on a new YouTube-like tool for videos. In a recently filed patent, the tech giant describes a product that users can use, like Shazam, to identify videos with copyrighted material.

As spotted by Windows Report, Microsoft may be working on an app that works similarly to YouTube’s Copyright Match Tool. This means that it would be able to automatically detect unauthorized use of copyrighted video content. The goal of the app is to give content creators and broadcasting companies a way to find this unauthorized material.

The best new streaming movies this week

The Marvels – Jan 16, VOD

The Marvels is now out on VOD. This time around the action takes place as the Kree empire collapses and its remnants prepare for war. After her powers become connected to two other women, Captain Marvel will need to team up with these two new heroes to take on the greatest threat to humanity in years. While The Marvels hasn’t done as well with critics and fans alike, and I agree it’s not quite as good as early Marvel outings. Still, it’s a decent enough sequel and worth the watch if you enjoyed the first film.

Don’t believe Samsung when it says the S24 Ultra has a ‘quad tele’ camera

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra camera with Pixel in background
Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority
Opinion post by
Hadlee Simons

Smartphone manufacturers have a historical affinity for bending the truth regarding camera zoom. From Apple to Google and more, we’ve even seen companies inventing new terms altogether in a bid to avoid saying “digital zoom” or “hybrid zoom.”

It looks like that hasn’t changed with Samsung and the Galaxy S24 series, either. Samsung claimed during its Unpacked event that the new Galaxy S24 Ultra has a “quad tele” camera system. What?! Four zoom lenses! That’s unprecedented! The same marketing term can be found on the official Galaxy S24 Ultra page on Samsung.com. You shouldn’t believe the company’s claim, however, even if the Ultra is poised to be one of the best camera phones of 2024.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 series comes with Google’s Gemini AI baked in

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzDqHl91IHI
  • Thanks to a new partnership between Google Cloud and Samsung, the Galaxy S24 comes with Gemini Pro and Gemini Nano baked in.
  • Gemini Pro powers AI functions within the Samsung Notes, Voice Recorder, and Keyboard apps.
  • Gemini Nano powers AI functions in the Google Messages app.

Google recently launched Gemini, its latest large language model, to the public. This LLM will power much of Google’s AI smarts in the years to come. At the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, Google has announced that the Galaxy S24 series also comes with Gemini, powering several of the Galaxy AI features that form the primary highlight of the new phones.

Google has announced a new partnership between Google Cloud and Samsung that bakes Gemini into the Galaxy S24 series and lets the phone superpower its apps and services with AI. Samsung also becomes the first Android OEM to use Gemini Pro and Gemini Nano on the same phone, as the Pixel 8 Pro‘s December 2023 Feature Drop added support only for Gemini Nano.

What you need to know about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy

The Samsung Galaxy S24 series sports a new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor to provide blazing-fast performance for apps, games, and the phone’s new Galaxy AI features. Much like last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy that powered the Galaxy S23 range, the new phones include an “optimized” version of Qualcomm’s latest processor — the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Unfortunately, neither Qualcomm nor Samsung has detailed the low-level specifics of what those optimizations entail, so we’ll have to wait for more time with the devices to see how the “for Galaxy” variant compares to the 8 Gen 3s you’ll find elsewhere. We’re still looking at the same octa-core CPU setup and Adeno GPU architecture, but the partnership may have tweaked various clock speeds. Last year’s model features marginal clock speed improvements that didn’t really move the needle performance-wise, and that’s probably still the case here.

TikTok not working? Here’s how to fix it (Updated: Fresh outage)

Update: January 15, 2024 (12:43 AM ET): It seems TikTok is experiencing issues right now. Reports on DownDetector suggest the platform is not loading for many users. People are also unable to post or search for anything on the app. Reports about the outage are also popping up all over X (formerly Twitter).

Original article: From app crashes to video upload errors, TikTok issues can be frustrating when they interrupt the fun. If you are experiencing problems with the TikTok app, try these troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. Here’s how to fix TikTok when it’s not working so you can get back to enjoying the app.

Editor’s note: We used a Google Pixel 7 running Android 14 and an Apple iPhone 12 Mini running iOS 17.1. Some steps and menus may look different depending on your device and software version.

Is your internet down?

The first thing to try is to check your internet connection. A weak Wi-Fi signal is often the culprit, so you can use one of our recommended apps to run a speed test to help diagnose the problem. You can also try switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data to see whether or not the issue is related to connectivity.

If you find that switching to mobile data helps, the problem might be your home network. A quick fix that works very often is trying to restart the Wi-Fi router. Some have a reset button, and you may even be able to use an app to restart your router. If you don’t have those options, unplugging the router, waiting for about a minute, and plugging it back in will do the trick.

Also, if you’re using mobile data, you should check if your mobile data is turned on.

How to enable mobile data on Android:

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Go into Network & internet.
  3. Select SIMs.
  4. Tap on your main SIM.
  5. Toggle on Mobile data.
  6. You can also turn on Roaming. Just keep in mind this may incur extra charges. Check your plan.

How to turn on cellular data on iPhone:

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Go into Cellular.
  3. Toggle on Cellular Data.
  4. You can also go into Cellular Data Options or SIMs to turn on Data Roaming. Again, this may incur extra charges.

Check if TikTok is down

The other reason why TikTok might not be working is that the service might be down. In that case, it’s not just you who is experiencing problems. We recommend visiting DownDetector, which provides 24-hour volumetric data on the most reported issues.

You can also see a map of live outages in your area and track progress updates for when TikTok is back up and running. Sadly, all you can do if TikTok is down is wait. In the meantime, you could just have fun with other apps.
